ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia junior outside linebacker Jarvis Jones could miss Saturday's game at Kentucky as a result of the sprained ankle he sustained during the 35-7 loss at South Carolina on Oct. 6.

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt said Sunday that he expected Jones to play, but he was less certain Tuesday. Jones sat out Monday's two-hour practice in pads and missed Tuesday's workout as well.

"We'll see," Richt said. "We're not counting him out yet. He had been running on a treadmill underwater and had done extremely well. We figured when we put him on land that he would hit the ground running, literally, but he wasn't ready to practice."

Jones, who missed the Florida Atlantic game after suffering a strained groin at Missouri, leads the Bulldogs with 15 quarterback pressures, 9.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.

"If he's healthy enough to play, we want him to play," Richt said. "There is no thought of holding him out this game so that he's 100 percent next game."

Chomp, chomp

If Florida defeats South Carolina this Saturday in Gainesville and the Bulldogs prevail in Lexington, then the winner of next week's Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville will control its destiny in the SEC East race. A South Carolina win Saturday would give the Gamecocks the head-to-head tiebreakers over the Bulldogs and Gators, so Georgia players have a rare occasion to pull for Florida.

"We kind of took it out of our own hands, so I'll be a Florida Gators fan this weekend," Bulldogs center David Andrews said. "It will help us out. It is what it is."

Said quarterback Aaron Murray: "I think everyone has a free pass."

Poignant obituary

Not everyone in Georgia's football family had a chance to move on from the loss in Columbia, S.C.

Phil Self, a 66-year-old public accountant, died four days later. According to his obituary in last Saturday's Macon Telegraph, Self graduated cum laude from Georgia and summa cum laude from Georgia's School of Law.

His obituary ended with the following: "Phil was a diehard Georgia Bulldogs fan and was a season tickets holder for decades. It is a shame that the last game he saw was the tragedy last Saturday night."

Gates for now

Kenarious Gates had a difficult night facing South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, but the 6-foot-5, 318-pound junior remains the Bulldogs' top left tackle, according to Richt. When asked if Gates would stay at left tackle next season, Richt wasn't sure.

"Whoever the best left tackle is for Georgia next season will start at left tackle," he said, "so I wouldn't say that Kenarious has nailed it down for the rest of his career."

Odds and ends

Georgia has a 51-12-2 series lead over Kentucky, including a 24-7 mark in Lexington. ... Kentucky's seven opponents are a combined 37-7, while Georgia's six foes are just 16-22. ... Murray still has 71 career touchdown passes, one shy of David Greene's school mark. ... Rhett McGowan will handle punt returns for a second straight game.
