Dual exhibits at Jewish Cultural Center

Dual exhibits on view through Nov. 30 at the Jewish Cultural Center Gallery, 5461 North Terrace, "proclaim the unique visual dimensions of religion."

• "Interpretations: Contemporary Jewish Art" is a mixed-media exhibit that includes concrete sculptures by Chattanooga artist Kem Alexander; multimedia paper works and handmade artist books by South Carolina artist Jane (Sheindal) Muller; and collage paper cuts by Atlanta artist Flora Rosefsky.

Ann Treadwell, program director and exhibition curator, says the works are "playful, educational and celebratory" illustrations of significant life-cycle events. The exhibit includes the artists' interpretations of biblical stories in Hebrew, Yiddish and English as well as the visualizations of Jewish rituals and festivals, and the joyous journey of spiritual life.

• "Windows of Identity" is a joint exhibition of artists from the Hadera-Eron region of Israel and the Southern United States, united by P2G (Partnership Together), a program of the Jewish Agency for Israel and local Jewish federations.

Fifty artists were engaged in a project to express through their art their Jewish identity, Israeli and Zionist character. Each artist was given a 40- by 40-inch format on which to create his or her work.

The exhibit has been shown in Israel, in Nashville and is scheduled to continue touring through the southeastern United States. Local papercutting artist Deborah Tepper is among the artists whose work is included.

The JCC Gallery is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and by appointment. For more information, call 493-0270, ext. 13.
