Cemetery strolls

* Chattanooga: At the history stroll at Forest Hills Cemetery, 4016 Tennessee Ave., scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, walkers will go from grave to grave to learn about people important to Chattanooga's history who are buried there. More than 20 volunteers will tell the stories through portrayals of Grace Moore, Cortez Greer, L.J. Sharpe and Zella Armstrong, among others. Another volunteer will talk about a group of local Confederates. Volunteers will be in costumes corresponding to the time period their portrayal represents. The entire stroll should take about two hours. Admission is free, but a donation box is available to help support the nonprofit Forest Hills Cemetery Association.

* Cleveland: Lee University senior history majors will lead tours through the historic Fort Hill Cemetery off Worth Street in Cleveland, Tenn., from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Students and local performers dressed in period costumes will bring 19th-century residents of Bradley County back to life through stories of their history. Cost is $5 per person. Parking and shuttle service will be provided at the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland, 385 Third St, SW. Proceeds will go to Lee's William Snell Scholarship Fund. COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS

* Cleveland: The 25th anniversary of the Halloween Block Party in downtown Cleveland, Tenn., features fun on three stages from 5 to 10 p.m. and a Treat Street that opens at 6 p.m. The Dexter Thomas Band headlines the entertainment lineup at 8:15 p.m. A costume contest starts at 6 p.m. Besides candy, Treat Street features an inflatable jump house and slides, as well as food vendors. * Dayton: The two-day Pumpkinfest kicks off Friday in downtown Dayton, Tenn. The annual event, which features festival activities, food and entertainment, is designed to give kids an alternative to traditional Halloween activities. Events are scheduled from noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday along Market Street and around the Rhea County Courthouse. Highlights include a Great Pumpkin weigh-in, movie in the park and a pumpkin pie-eating contest on Friday; costume contests for all ages, treats from downtown merchants, hay rides and a scary-oke contest on Saturday. n LaFayette: The Scare on the Square in LaFayette, Ga., will take place on Halloween. The town square will be blocked off from 5:30 to 7 p.m. so merchants can hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. Last year, according to organizers, more than 30 merchants gave candy to more than 2,300 visitors. For information, call 706-639-1500.

The Michaels store at 2200 Hamilton Place Blvd. has scheduled three Halloween-themed make-and-take projects for ages 3 and up.

* Friday: Clay pot decorating, 6-8 p.m., requires purchase of clay pot.

* Saturday: Duck Tape pail or tote decorating, 11 a.m.-noon; requires purchase of pail or tote.

HAYRIDE, STORYTELLING

Sale Creek Lions Club presents its annual Halloween celebration Saturday at the clubhouse, 15222 Coppinger Road (behind Sale Creek Middle/High School). The evening starts with a hayride at 6 p.m., followed by tales from the Cleveland Storytelling Guild at 7 p.m. Free hot dogs and drinks will be available. For more information, call 332-2921.

PET COSTUME CONTESTS

Petco stores plan Howloween Trick & Treat pet costume contests at 2 p.m. Saturday. Prizes include Petco gift cards and treats from JW Pet and Old Mother Hubbard. Plus, dogs in costume who visit Petco any day in October receive a free treat.
