Boyd-Buchanan in A state final

Friday, January 1, 1904

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Boyd-Buchanan's Lady Buccaneers would probably admit they didn't have the greatest of regular seasons this high school volleyball season, but postseason has been a different matter. And it continues.

The Lady Bucs have extended their postseason as far as it can go and today will take on mighty Friendship Christian for the Class A state championship.

Boyd-Buchanan lost to the defending champion Lady Commanders on Thursday at Blackman High School but pushed them to the limit before falling 3-2. Set scores were 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 15-11.

Facing elimination in the losers-bracket final, the Lady Bucs put the loss behind them and defeated Knoxville's Grace Christian 3-2. Set scores were 28-30, 25-16, 25-20, 12-25, 15-9.

The championship match between Boyd-Buchanan (33-14) and Friendship Christian (56-4) is scheduled to start today at Middle Tennessee State University's Murphy Center at 3 p.m. EDT.

The Lady Bucs were not the No. 1-seeded team in their district tournament, that being Silverdale Baptist. But Boyd-Buchanan won the tournament title and then the Region 3 championship and after beating Jackson County in a state sectional moved on to the state tournament.

The Lady Bucs beat Grace Christian in their opening match Wednesday - that one also going five sets - and beat Madison 3-0 in a winners-bracket semifinal.

"Knoxville Grace had some great hitters," Boyd-Buchanan coach Ashley Rose said. "They gave us some trouble the first day."

Although the Lady Bucs lost in the winners't final, Rose said she was pleased with the effort, particularly against such a powerful-hitting team.

"The first game we played we played tremendous defense," Rose said of the match against the Lady Commanders. "We're a defensive-oriented team and the Friendship game was the best our defense has ever been. Our defense was awesome today.

"We're just happy to have another chance to play them."

Jessica Kirk topped Boyd-Buchanan with 24 kills and five aces in the two matches combined. Lindsey Yates totaled 52 assists and Katie Delay amassed 67 digs. Mandi Jones contributed 22 kills, 48 digs and three aces.
