Chattanooga firefighters combat blaze in empty building

A large fire broke out in a vacant Chattanooga building early Saturday evening.

Eight fire companies responded to 1010 Central Ave. at 6:38 p.m.

Firefighters pinpointed the blaze on the second floor of the building and got the flame under control within 15 minutes, just as it started to break through the roof.

The 911 Communications Center received numerous calls about the fire because the flames could be seen from a long distance away, spokesman Bruce Garner said in a news release. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
