Groups from Chattanooga area helping in Virginia, Maryland

Utility workers and local responders from the Chattanooga area are in Maryland and Virginia helping people there deal with the effects of Hurricane Sandy as the storm sweeps along the East Coast to the Northeast.

Eight lineworkers from South Pittsburg's Sequatchie Valley Electric Cooperative are prepared to help a cooperative in Windsor, Va., deal with the effects of Sandy.

A news release said the group from the Sequatchie Valley cooperative are among 60 from Tennessee cooperativees who are gathered in Virginia and Maryland to assist with power restoration after Sandy passes.

The Disaster Medical Assistance Team, which is based in Chattanooga, was activated and deployed over the weekend. A news release said the team was staging in Maryland to be ready to go anywhere in the Northeast to assist in the wake of Sandy.

The DMAT team is made up of local health care professional and their support workers.
