Jamin Godfrey

Tennessee State University junior kicker and punter Jamin Godfrey from McMinn Central High School was the Ohio Valley Conference and Football Championship Subdivision national specialist of the week after going 5-for-5 on field goals and kicking the winning extra point with time expired in the 18th-ranked Tigers' 22-21 defeat of Tennessee Tech. Until the last-play touchdown, Godfrey's field goals of 37, 32, 27, 41 and 22 yards were all the Tigers' points. Already holding a share of the TSU record for most extra points in a game (7-of-7 in 2011), Godfrey set a school record with his five made field goals Saturday. He also punted four times, one a 44-yarder.

Auto Racing

• Harrison resident Bobby Mayse led all 25 laps in winning the 26-car Limited Late Model/Crate feature race Saturday in the final night of track-championship points racing at Cleveland Speedway. Devin Dilbeck was second with Rick Hixson, Heath Hindman and Reuben Mayfield completing the top five. Chattanogans Robbie Greene and B.J. Wilson won the A-Hobby and B-Hobby races, the latter after Reagan Williams' motor was disqualified. Jody Hixson and Josh Walker were second and third in "A"; Jason Brown and points champ Lee Harbin were second and third in "B." Jon Brogdon of Cleveland was the Pony victor with Grady Stokes second , Chaz Lawson third and champ Danny Burnette fourth, and E.J. Bailey of Hixson won for the third time in a row in FWD with Derrick Forgey and Brad Cross the next two. The track's Spooker Weekend event also included a Georgia Mini Sprints race with Coby Adams of Mooresville, N.C., taking the win and a Southern Mod Lite Racing Series event with K.D. Knoedler of Vonore prevailing. Jason Welshan of Maryville was the track champion in LLM/Crate. The track will host its Swap Meet and Play Day on Nov. 10 and conclude the season with the 24th edition of the SAS Joe Lee Johnson/Gobbler race on Nov. 17.

• Returning to the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip after a 10-year absence, Tracy Cochran of Flintstone won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night in a 632-cubic-inch Chevrolet dragster owned and tuned by his neighbor, Jerry Wilson. Cochran won with a 4.91-second run on a 4.90 dial at 137.25 mph in the fastest car in the competition. Dustin Martin of Huntsville was second by inches in a 1957 Chevy with a modified 454 Chevy engine, and Darren Bates and Lance Kittle were third and fourth. Michael Garner of Chattanooga won the Foot Brake class and $700 with a 6.81 run on a 6.80 dial in his '69 Chevrolet Camaro, and Creeper Griep from East Ridge was second in a '76 Camaro. Steve Roberts was third in a '95 Ford Mustang GT. Mattie Keener of Dunlap won the Junior Dragster class with Chloe Keener of Whitwell second.

Fishing

• Corey Bradley of McDonald finished fourth among the boaters in the Walmart Bass Fishing League wild card tournament this past weekend on Lake Guntersville, and by finishing in the top six he qualified for the BFL All-American sponsored by Chevy next June on Nickajack Jake. Bradley's maximum 10 keepers totaled 30 pounds, 10 ounces and earned him $1,553. Darren Ashley of Calhoun Falls, S.C., won with 39-11, good for $4,112. Jeff Sparks of Chickamauga was 14th with 21-12, and Ray Elmore of Calhoun, Ga., also finished in the money with his 22nd-place 15-15. Anthony Ingle of Trion was 15th among the co-anglers.

Basketball

• The Bryan College men's basketball team quickly evened its record in the young season by beating Hiwassee 75-65 on Monday in Dayton. Tim Fortenberry led the Lions (1-1), who are playing without top returning player Rob Riley this semester, with 22 points and nine rebounds. He was credited with eight offensive rebounds, and he made four 3-point shots. Brandon Cole and Robert Troino scored 16 and 15 points for Bryan. Lazerick Boyd, Justin Browner, Joel Bailey and Rico Stanley led Hiwassee with 11 each.

Volleyball

• Sophomore middle blocker Kendall Williams from Ringgold made the block that ended the match and a come-from-behind 3-2 victory for the West Georgia volleyball team at West Alabama this past weekend. She totaled five blocks with five kills.

• Cleveland High School graduate Payton Tipton made 21 digs for King College in a 3-1 volleyball loss Monday to Montevallo.
