Former UTC Moc Christine Wolf wins pro tourney

Christine Wolf became the first former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's golfer to win a professional tournament when she defeated Chrisje de Vries of the Netherlands on the first playoff hole for the championship of the Crete Ladies Open in the Ladies European Tour Access Series. Wolf, a native of Austria, and de Vries each shot 4-under-par 67 in the rain-shortened event at Hersonissos.

• Lee University won its Lady Flames Shootout held Monday and Tuesday at Cleveland Country Club, and the Lady Flames' Madison Alexander edged Bryan's Carrilee Hiers for the medalist honor on the first playoff hole after each finished at 161. Lee's Bernadette Little and Courtney Shelton were third and fourth at 164 and 165, and teammate Sloane Skinner tied for fifth at 166. USC-Beaufort was the runner-up team at 689, 33 strokes behind Lee. Stephanie Carr from sixth-place Tennessee Wesleyan tied for 11th at 171 in the chilly, windy event, Lee's Kristin Bourg shared 15th and Audrey Nelson from 10th-place Bryan was 17th.

Soccer

• Lee freshman goalkeeper Tom Halsall from Manchester, England, was voted the NAIA national men's soccer defensive player of the week for his work in getting the Flames into the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament. Halsall have three saves in a 4-1 victory over Truett-McConnell and then won a 1-0 shutout against 12th-ranked Southern Polytechnic on Saturday. "I'm really happy for Tom and this very nice honor," Lee coach Paul Furey said. "He has worked hard all season." The Flames play at top-seeded Mobile at 5 p.m. Saturday.

• Jorge Gonzalez of Bryan College was the Appalachian Athletic Conference men's soccer player of the week after helping the Lions edge NCAA Division II member Carson-Newman 2-1 in overtime and scoring the tying goal in the last minute of regulation in a 2-2 draw with the NAIA's then-top-ranked Rio Grande. Now 21st-ranked Bryan (11-3-2, 6-1-1) is seeded second for the AAC men's tournament and will host seventh-seeded St. Andrews on Saturday, when Union College will visit third-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan. Bryan's eighth-seeded women will host ninth seed St. Andrews tonight at 7 with the winner playing Saturday at top-seeded Montreat.

• The Covenant College women's soccer team won 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Berry College, but the Covenant men (9-9-1) lost 2-0 at home against Trevecca Nazarene despite a 13-4 edge in corner kicks and a 16-12 advantage in shots. For the Lady Scots (15-4-1), Kara Lee scored in the 44th minute from a Jenna Vreeland assist and Katelyn Newsome scored on a counterattack with 63 seconds to go after Berry (4-10-2) equalized in the 75th minute. Covenant sophomre defender Hudson Brock was the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I men's player of the week for his part in two one-goal wins. He had a goal in each, including the winner in overtime against Huntingdon.

Volleyball

• The UTC volleyball team lost 3-1 in its Southern Conference match Tuesday night at Samford, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-22. Julimar Alvarado had 13 kills and fellow freshman Briana Reid had 11 plus 11 digs for UTC (10-17, 4-8), while Bridget Camacho had 39 assists, Paula Passmore made 27 digs and Sarah Batterton had eight kills. Casey Garvey had 50 assists and 10 digs for Samford (18-8, 10-2), while Lauren Hutchinson, Michaela Reesor and Elizabeth Neisler had 15, 14 and 13 kills.

• Freshman Nicole Sumida had eight kills and six aces and reserves Becky Bourne and Courtney Wilson had 16 and 14 assists for Lee University in a 25-4, 25-4, 25-6 SSAC volleyball win Tuesday at Truett-McConnell. Kalyn Helton served five aces for ninth-ranked Lee (23-9).

• Taylor Fink, the most recent AAC volleyball player of the week, had 26 assists as first-place Bryan College breezed to a 25-3, 25-10, 25-15 win Tuesday against last-place Point University. Chelsea Breaden and Kaylan Dilts each had eight kills for Bryan (26-9, 14-2), and reigning libero of the week Corrie Walker had 13 digs. Fink had 109 assists and 27 digs in nine sets last week, including 42 assists and 15 digs in a 3-0 defeat of Reinhardt. In another AAC match Tuesday, Tennessee Wesleyan beat Reinhardt 3-0, leaving both at 4-12 in league play.

• Chelsea Van Dyk had nine kills and Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 26 assists and eight digs Tuesday as the Covenant volleyball team beat visiting Oglethorpe 25-15, 25-21, 26-24. Estes Carlson and Pretoria den Boer had 16 and 14 digs for the Lady Scots (22-6). McKenna Bondarenko had 15 kills for Oglethorpe (9-15).
