Former longtime City Councilman Yusuf Hakeem said last week he is deciding whether to run again.
"I'm weighing it," Hakeem said.
He said he plans to make an announcement this week.
If he enters the City Council race, he would be running against Councilman Peter Murphy in District 9.
Murphy said last week he would not comment until Hakeem makes an official announcement.
Hakeem came to the council in 1990 when the form of city government changed. He served until 2006 when he resigned to take a position with the state's Board of Probation and Parole.
That position came to an end last January, he said. While he has not been replaced yet on the board, it's a possibility, he said.
"I'm trying to make my decisions in the future without someone else making it for me," he said.
