The headliners for Friday, Sept. 7

(All kickoffs at 7:30 unless noted)

East Hamilton (2-1) at Bradley Central (2-1)

An early peek: Both are coming off wins following losses, and this will be Bradley Central's first home game of the year. It is, in fact, the first of four straight at home. After losing at Baylor, Bradley spanked Soddy-Daisy 35-0 with fourth-year starting quarterback Bryce Copeland clicking well and coach Damon Floyd taking the wraps off Baylor Terrell, who appears to be an accomplished backfield mate for Logan Fetzner, the TFP Player of the Week for the first round of games this season. ... East Hamilton looked strong in rebounding from a loss to neighbor Ooltewah with a lopsided victory over Central. The Hurricanes had most of their starters on the sideline by the end of the third quarter. ... This game matches two of the biggest offensive lines in the area. ... East Hamilton, which entered the Central game having given up 38 points, allowed just a field goal, and that after a special-teams penalty.

South Pittsburg (2-0) at Sequatchie County (1-2), 8

An early peek: Many thought in the preseason that this had the makings of a good one, although South Pittsburg's Pirates are loaded again with skill people and Sequatchie is rebuilding with more than 40 of the 60-plus Indians being sophomores or freshmen. What some folks are wondering is whether anybody is going to be able to force Pirates coach Vic Grider to unveil a passing game. It is obvious to even the loving grandmothers, after all, that South Pittsburg can run the football. Sequatchie, with all that youth, has been down, up and then down again, but this will be the Indians' first home game, and the folks in Dunlap love their Indians. Too, this is something of a Sequatchie Valley rivalry.

Tyner (2-0) at McCallie (0-2)

An early peek: The game matches two of the area's most veteran coaches in Tyner's Wayne Turner and McCallie's Ralph Potter. Turner's Ram Train, keyed by a smothering defense anchored by a monster line, shut out rival Brainerd 27-0 while McCallie was getting pasted by defending Division II state champion Ensworth. The very competitive Potter, according to one person, was chewing nails after the season-opening loss to McMinn County, and he surely wasn't pleased last Friday - not so much with the loss but the fact that the loss was by 47-10.

Calhoun (1-0) at Dalton (1-0)

An early peek: Both are coming off close wins, Dalton over Ringgold on Thursday and Calhoun over Ridgeland on Friday. If you haven't heard, that win by the Yellow Jackets over Ridgeland came in the final four seconds of the game and probably wouldn't have happened without quarterback Taylor Lamb. ... Dalton's Catamounts hold a 34-6-1 advantage, but the Jackets have a nifty three-game series win streak working.
