University of Tennessee at Chattanooga quarterbacks Terrell Robinson and Jacob Huesman both played in the Mocs' 34-13 season-opening loss to South Florida last Saturday. That was the plan going in, and that plan hasn't changed.

In other words, for coach Russ Huesman there is no brewing quarterback controversy. When asked if he was worried about that being a headache during the season, he answered, "Not really." He said both players will continue to get snaps and the one who's the most effective likely will play more.

"That's the way it will be, whether it's Jacob or Terrell," he said. "You get the hot hand, you start making some plays, and that's the direction you've got to go."

Robinson, a Southern Conference co-freshman of the year in 2011, started Saturday's game. Coach Huesman's son, a redshirt freshman, entered the game during UTC's second series. The quarterbacks rotated series for the rest of the first half.

"They've both got to execute the offense -- get in there, get us in the right play, get the right reads, execute it properly," Coach Huesman said. "They both had their share of mistakes."

Neither was very effective in the first quarter, but Jacob Huesman led the Mocs on a 14-play, 57-yard drive that began midway through the second. He completed passes of 16 and 29 yards on the drive and appeared to score on a 3-yard run, but a holding call negated the play.

Having the hot hand at the end of the first half, he started the second. Robinson and he both got snaps during the Mocs' second possession of the third quarter, and Huesman took all the snaps on the final drive of the third, which resulted in a field goal.

Robinson was in for only one series in the fourth quarter and finished 4-for-5 passing for 20 yards and added seven runs for 9 yards. The younger Huesman had a team-high 17 carries for 1 net yard (46 gain, 45 for loss) and completed 9 of 13 passes for 82 yards.

"Rolling in and out, it was hard to get [in a rhythm]," Robinson said after the game. "Coach has got to go with the guy that's got the offense rolling, and he's got to see who's going to get the offense rolling. Jacob, he outgunned me, and that's why he got more playing time."

As for the future, Coach Huesman said "we'll keep assessing it during the week and see where they are" heading into Saturday's game at Jacksonville State.

Ealey will play

Jacksonville State running back Washaun Ealey suffered a minor knee injury during the Gamecocks' 49-24 loss at Arkansas last week, but JSU coach Jack Crowe said Monday that he expects Ealey to play against the Mocs.

A former teammate of Mocs defensive tackle Derrick Lott at Georgia, Ealey transferred to JSU last season. In UTC's 38-17 rout of the Gamecocks in 2011, Ealey had 10 carries for 49 yards. He had four carries for 9 yards last Saturday.

Extra points

Coach Huesman said Nick Pollard did a solid job in his first game as UTC's punter, averaging 40 yards on his nine attempts. However, he said too many were caught in the air or on one hop. Huesman likes the punts to be line-drive rollers that are difficult to field. ... Jacksonville State is ranked No. 24 in this week's Sports Network poll. The Mocs are receiving votes.
