Citing a lack of participation, Valleybrook Golf and Country Club owner David Drake canceled the 2012 Red Bud Invitational on Monday. He said less than a dozen golfers had signed up for the tournament that was scheduled for this weekend. The Red Bud was considered a major in the Chattanooga District Golf Association series with the Brainerd and Signal Mountain invitationals and the Men's Metro. The Red Bud dates back to the 1960s and had more than 200 participants in its heyday. It had 47 last year, when it was held in September, and just 26 players when it was held in May 2010. "It's more my fault than anything, and I just didn't have enough participation to make it a decent tournament," Drake said. "There are so many tournaments we compete with. I really need at least 100 people to make it a viable tournament."
• SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. -- Hixson resident and Notre Dame High School graduate Richard Powell shot a 71 Monday to lead King College to fourth place after the first round of the 15-team Smokey Mountain Intercollegiate tournament at the Sevierville Golf Club. The senior shot a 33 on the front nine.
• Ron Lee of Ooltewah won for the third time in four weeks of racing Saturday night in the Super Pro class at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. In Marvin Crutcher's 1927 Ford Roadster powered by a 400-cubic-inch small-block Chevrolet engine, Lane won with a 5.69-second burst on a 5.69 dial-in. Jeremiah Powell of Trenton was second with a 6.99 run on a 6.99 dial in a '63 Chevy Nova, and Johnny Lewis and Kevin Redden were third and fourth. Tom Neubert of Corryton, Tenn., won the Heads-Up 4.70 class with a 4.73 run in a '57 Chevy, with Ossie Newcomb of Knoxville second, David Soloman third and Brian Farrar fourth. Michael Garner won the Foot Brake eliminations with a 6.65 run on a 6.65 dial in an '86 Ford Mustang GL, with Darrel Goodner second and Marty Goldsmith third. Mattie Keener won the Junior Dragster class; Ryan Dennis was the runner-up. Jerry Wilson of Flintstone had the low elapsed time (4.55 seconds) and top speed (152.30 mph) of the meet in his 632-ci-powered dragster.
• Walmart pro Wesley Strader from Spring City finished fourth in the Walmart Bass Fishing League's Volunteer Division "super tournament" Saturday and Sunday on Watts Bar Lake. Strader got $1,059 plus a $1,000 Evinrude bonus for his total of 19 pounds, 5 ounces. Jonathan Bowling of Harriman won $4,540 with his first-place 28-11, and Joe Lee of Knoxville was second with 21-10 and got $2,270. Kingsport's Tim Hicks had four ounces more than Strader and received $1,515. Rockwood residents Glenn Carter and Craig Powers were fifth and seventh with 18-10 and 15-4. Ron Lane of Flagler Beach, Fla., won the co-angler division and $2,134 with 19-9.
• The Chattanooga-based Premier Soccer Academy Lanus won the under-16 boys' Red Division of the FC Alliance tournament this past weekend in Knoxville, and the PSA Los Guapos just missed playing for the U-13 Red title, giving up a goal in the last five seconds for a 1-0 semifinal loss to the Carolina Elite 99B Challenge. The Los Guapos, who include u-11 and -12 players as well as u-13s, beat the FC Alliance 00B Red 1-0 and the Birmingham United 00 Elite Red 4-0. The u-16 Lanus team coached by Pedro Kozak and Charlie Mackay won 3-1 over SCOR (Soccer Club of Oak Ridge) 97 and tied the Blount United SC Hammers 97 3-3 before downing the FC Alliance 97B Red 3-0 and winning 2-0 in the final against the Chattanooga Football Club. PSA Lanus players are Alexander Ahlyege, Sandi Beganovic, Emerson Brock, Larry Clark III, Markos Howard, Nicholas Kirk, Vladislav Kouzniaev, Jonathan Mackay, Christopher Payne, Ethan Pettit, Jonathan Ricketts, Josias Roach, Weston Robertson, Daniel Schmidt, Grant Sutherland, Nicholas Taylor and Noah Thornton.
• Kelsey Langille scored four goals and Shauna Gilpin added two plus an assist as Cumberland University whipped Tennessee Wesleyan 8-1 in women's soccer Sunday at Lebanon, Tenn. Taylor Nay had three assists for Cumberland (4-1). Samaira Khan headed in a Britten Fandrich cross late in the first half for TWC (0-4), making the score 3-1. The hosts had a 27-7 dominance in shots.
• The Tennessee Temple University volleyball team lost 25-10, 25-22, 14-25, 25-23 Monday night to visiting Johnson University. The Lady Crusaders (2-8) had not played since winning 3-0 at the Knoxville school a week earlier.
• Georgia Northwestern Technical College won 18-25, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, 15-10 in volleyball Monday night at West Georgia Tech. GNTC's Lady Cats are 1-2.
