A drug-money trafficking investigation last year led to the the Whitfield County sheriff's department receiving over $800,000 this week.

A drug-money trafficking investigation last year led to the the Whitfield County sheriff's department receiving over $800,000 this week, Sheriff Scott Chitwood said.

The department assisted in an investigation last September and intercepted more than $2.2 million dollars in cash as it was being transported to Mexico.

The department turned the money over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. After a year-long forfeiture process, the department has received an $821,000 share of the seized money.

Georgia law specifies that money forfeited can be used for any law enforcement purpose, Chitwood said.
