EPB increases web speeds in Chattanooga, maintains pricing

EPB will bump up most of its residential Internet customers to the next speed tier at no cost, the utility announced today.

The city-owned utility will no longer offer its slowest tier, 30 megabits per second, and instead will offer 50 megabits per second to those customers at the same price - $57.99.

EPB, which offers gigabit fiber-optic Internet speeds across its Chattanooga service area, is upgrading customers to celebrate its third anniversary in the fiber-to-the-home market, said Harold DePriest, president and CEO.

"Enhancing our FI-Speed Internet was something we could do to celebrate, so we did it," DePriest said.

The upgrade is active now, and won't require any action on customers' part.

While EPB has upgraded its 30 Mbps and 50 Mbps customers to the next tier, it created a new 250 Mbps tier for its 100 Mbps customers rather than upgrade them to gigabit service. The utility also slashed the price of its gigabit service by $50.

This marks the second time EPB has upgraded its customer base at no charge. The utility previously eliminated its 15 megabits per second tier in August 2010, bumping those customers up to 30 Mbps.
