Tennessee highway safety grants awarded

NASHVILLE - Gov. Bill Haslam and state Transportation Commissioner John Schroer announced Wednesday that more than $18.1 million is going to law enforcement agencies statewide through the Governor's Highway Safety Office.

The goal is saving lives and reducing injuries on state roads through innovation, coordination and program support in partnership with public and private organizations.

Law enforcement agencies in Hamilton County are getting $380,000 in highway safety grants.

Below are the grants going to other Southeast Tennessee agencies:

BLEDSOE COUNTY

• $5,000: Bledsoe County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Pikeville Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

BRADLEY COUNTY

• $5,000: Bradley County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $10,588: Charleston Police Department, alcohol countermeasures

GRUNDY COUNTY

• $4,997.88: Grundy County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Monteagle Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Tracy City Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

MARION COUNTY

• $5,000: Jasper Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $15,000: Kimball Police Department, network coordinator

• $5,000: Marion County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Powells Crossroads Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $10,000: South Pittsburg Police Department, alcohol countermeasures

• $5,000: Whitwell Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

McMINN COUNTY

• $8,102: Athens Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $4,992: Calhoun Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Englewood Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $14,994: Etowah Police Department, "Working to Keep Etowah Streets Safe"

• $10,673: McMinn County Rescue Squad, "Prom Promise"

• $39,999: McMinn County Sheriff's Office, alcohol saturation patrol/roadside sobriety checkpoint

• $4,989: Niota Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $144,064: 10th Judicial District Attorney, DUI prosecution

MEIGS COUNTY

• $14,940: Town of Decatur, impaired driving enforcement program

• $5,000: Meigs County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

POLK COUNTY

• $14,995: Benton Police Department, network coordinator

• $15,470: Benton Police Department, Impaired Driving Enforcement Program

• $5,000: Benton Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

• $5,000: Polk County Sheriff's Office, high-visibility law enforcement programs

RHEA COUNTY

• $13,733: Dayton Police Department, "Making an Impact in Dayton"

• $25,000: Rhea County Sheriff's Office, alcohol saturation patrols/roadside sobriety checkpoints

• $5,000: Spring City Police Department, high-visibility law enforcement programs

SEQUATCHIE COUNTY
