Michael Dobson, a mechanic from Rocky Face, won the Super Pro class and $1,500 Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip in a 1972 Ford Mustang GT 351 he drives on the street and has raced at the strip for more than 20 years. He won with a perfect 7.14-second run on a 7.14 dial-in. Cleveland's Michael Davis was second in the Scottie Walters-prepared 632-cubic-inch Chevrolet dragster in which he won the week before, with a 4.78 run on a 4.77 dial. Tony Helms was third in a '68 Chevy Camaro, and Cody Holloway was fourth in a '64 Chevy II. Ringgold's Chris Smith won the Foot Brake class with a 6.62 run on a 6.60 dial in a '72 Mustang powered by a 350 Chevy engine, and Melvin Croft and Michael Garner were second and third. Fort Payne's William Kilgore won out of 24 entries in the Motorcycle class with a 6.00 run on a 5.98 dial on his Kawasaki; Allen Hitt was second and Cameron Coulby was third. Mattie Keener of Dunlap won the Junior Dragster class with Henagar's Colby Crane second.

Volleyball

• University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior libero Paula Passmore was named Monday as the Southern Conference volleyball defensive player of the week for the second time in five weeks. Passmore had 23 digs in the Mocs' win Friday night against Appalachian State and added 34 in a 3-1 loss Saturday to Western Carolina. She averaged 8.14 digs a set in the two matches and leads the SoCon with 375 this season, averaging 6.25 per set. She has 2,007 career digs and is only 51 away from second place in school history.

Golf

• ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The UTC men's golf team is 15th out of the 15 teams in the power-packed PING/Golfweek Preview at the site of the 2013 NCAA championship tournament, the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course, after shooting the second day's worst aggregate round by nine strokes, 301. The Mocs are ranked 24th nationally, but 13 of the teams in the field are ranked ahead of them. UCLA leads at 566 with UNLV at 567 and Georgia Tech and California tied for third at 569. Georgia is 11th at 579. UTC is at 596, 14 strokes behind 14th-place Florida State, but the Mocs' Chris Robb is tied for 15th individually at 142 with Liam Johnston tied for 43rd at 146 and Steven Fox sharing 53rd place at 148.

• TOCCOA, Ga. -- Covenant College freshman Levi Nix is the individual leader with a 3-under-par 69 and his team is in third place at 310, seven shots behind leader Erskine, after Monday's first round of the Emmanuel Invitational golf tournament. The Scots' Trey Patterson is tied for sixth at 76, and Cameron Lewis shares 21st place at 80. The lone Covenant entrant in the women's tournament, Maggie Mauze, is tied for 17th at 91.

• Brett Patterson of McMinnville led Middle Tennessee State to a 10th-place team finish in the 15-team Mason Rudolph men's golf tournament this past weekend at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Vanderbilt won the team title. Patterson tied for 20th individually at 217 with a final-day 71. Avery George from Walker Valley is 29th at 160 for the fourth-place MTSU women (out of 13 teams) in the Marilynn Smith Invitational at Lawrence, Kan.

• GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Wesleyan men's golf team is fifth out of 12 teams, mostly NCAA Division II schools, after the first round of the Tusculum Fall Classic at Link Hills Country Club. The NAIA Bulldogs had a 294 Monday, 11 behind leader Lincoln Memorial, and TWC's Josh Wheeler is tied for fifth individually at 71 with Tyler Reynolds in a big group sharing 13th at 73 and Cody Godfrey and Keoni Vidrine at 75.

• BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Sewanee men's team finished ninth in the 10-team Southern Athletic Association Preview that ended Monday at Limestone Springs Golf Club. Defending NCAA Division III champion Oglethorpe won the new conference's fall event with a 7-under-par 569 for 36 holes. Sewanee's total was 649.

Football

• Former Calhoun (Ga.) High School and University of Tennessee star Da'Rick Rogers, now a Tennessee Tech receiver, was the Ohio Valley Conference football newcomer of the week for the second time this season after setting a school record with 18 catches for 303 yards in a 41-38 two-overtime loss Saturday at Southeast Missouri State. Two of his catches from fellow Calhoun alumnus Tre Lamb went for touchdowns. Rogers ranks fifth nationally with 127.75 receiving yards per game.

• The Red Bank Middle/High School team won the gold medal in the Special Olympics flag football state tournament for the second year in a row this past weekend in Antioch, Tenn.

Soccer

• The Tennessee Temple University women's soccer team overpowered winless Wesleyan College from Macon, Ga., 6-0 on Monday at Camp Jordan Park, and the Temple men beat Hiwassee 9-1. Seunfunmi Ogunbunmi and Jacob Fremmer each scored twice for the Crusaders, whose other goals came from Kevin Carrilo, Ezequiel Nunez, Garrick Davis, Cesar Carrilo and Chris Tindal. Liz Adams netted two goals, Rebecca Whiteside had a goal and two assists and Beth Bontekoe, Brenda Velazquez and Kirsten Fowler also scored for the Lady Crusaders (2-6-1), who outshot Wesleyan 31-5 with a 21-1 margin in shots on goal.
