Jurors deliberate fate of woman who allegedly tried to smother her son

After spending the morning weighing evidence in the case of a local woman charged with attempted aggravated assault, jurors told Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Barry Steelman they were at an impasse.

Steelmen sent the jury back for more deliberation in the case of 43-year-old Monica Dawn Hammers, who faces a charge of attempted aggravated assault.

She was charged in connection with a May 5, 2011, incident at Erlanger hospital when authorities say she tried to smother her 4-year-old son who had been admitted with digestive problems.

On Thursday, Steelman ruled there wasn't enough evidence for a charge of attempted murder against Hammers.
