David Massengill is stepping aside as the Silverdale Baptist Academy girls' basketball coach with his daughter and team leader Mariah about to begin her college career.Silverdale Baptist Academy girls' basketball coach David Massengill has stepped down after five seasons with the program.
Massengill directed the Lady Seahawks to a 20-10 record in 2012-13. They won the District 5-A championship and qualified for the first time for a Class A sectional, where they fell to eventual state champion Jackson County.
He coach the Lady Seahwaks to three consecutive district championships, although the first two were shared with Arts & Sciences. Team leader Mariah Massengill, the coach's daughter, is graduating and has signed to play for Eastern Kentucky University.
"There was just no way I could do both, with my own child playing a few hours away," Coach Massengill said. "I didn't think it was fair to either party for me to be a part of something I couldn't be totally committed to, but we had a great opportunity to help build a program with the girls.
"I thought we built a program that will continue forward with a winning tradition."
Mariah is the school's all-time leading scorer with more than 2,300 career points.
"He's been an awesome asset to our program and we hate to lose him, but he wasn't sure he was going to be able to make a commitment to us and we understand," SBA athletic director Al Rogers said. "He's taken our program to a level we'd never experienced, and the next time we go that far we can act like we've been there before."
Rogers said the search for a new coach started "last week."
