FORT PAYNE, Ala. - Despite some storm damage at DeSoto State Park near Fort Payne, officials have announced a lineup of spring events and activities beginning today.
"Fairytale Weekend" starts this evening with a free showing of "Fairy Tale, A True Story" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. CDT, under the open sky at the campfire ring in the improved campground.
Snacks are provided, but participants should bring something to sit on. If it rains, the movie will be moved to the Nature Center next to the Country Store. Call 256-997-5025 for details.
From 10 a.m. to noon CDT Saturday, Renee Morrison of Jacksonville State University Field School and park naturalist Brittney Hughes will conduct a free children's workshop at the park Nature Center on how to use observation skills and creativity in nature. Participants must register ahead by calling 256-782-5697.
From 11 a.m. to noon CDT, Little River Canyon Center staff and volunteers will read unique children's literature in the Canyon Center Gift Shop the first Saturday of every month.
At 1 p.m. CDT on Sunday, instruction on the basics of rappelling will be offered to registered participants ($30 per person for ages 10 and up, including gear) to learn about gear, knot tying, rappelling, hardware and its uses.
A caravan or shuttle to and from the training site is available for $3 per person. Call the park Country Store at 256-845-5075 to register or register in person.
The Nature Center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT and features mounted and live animals and shows.
GORDON, Ga. - A wood pellet manufacturing company is building a $114 million plant on the Wilkinson-Jones County line in Gordon, Ga.
Representatives of the Atlanta-based Enova Energy Group say they chose the Middle Georgia location because of the amount of Southern yellow pine trees in the region. Enova manufactures wood pellets that are used instead of coal to power energy-generating turbines by European utilities.
The Courier Herald of Dublin reported officials hope to break ground on the plant in May or early June.
TULLAHOMA, Tenn. - Tullahoma is holding a Salute to Heroes concert and celebration to recognize the 40th anniversary of the return of troops from the Vietnam War.
The free event will be Saturday at the National Guard Armory. Police Chief Paul Blackwell said city leaders thought it would be meaningful to recognize the veterans in the area.
Leaders from the American Legion Post 43 and the Marine Corps League 1128 will speak. Blackwell said in a news release that veterans are encouraged to bring memorabilia to display.
