Volleyball senior Jasmine Brown from Chattanooga and Girls Preparatory School was Tennessee's female candidate for the Southeastern Conference's prestigious H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Award for 2013, and long-snapper Ty Frix from Calhoun was Georgia's male candidate. The honors encompassing athletic and academic excellence and community service went Friday night to Kentucky runner Chelsea Oswald and Alabama football offensive lineman Barrett Jones. Brown will graduate in May with a degree in social work, and she has a cumulative grade point average of 3.92 on a 4.0 scale. She made the 2012 SEC Community Service Team and played in all 30 matches last season with three starts and 75 digs. Frix graduated magna cum laude in biological engineering last May and is working on an MBA at Georgia, where he was the snapper in 54 consecutive games and was special-teams captain in 2012. He previously was honored as the rising senior male athlete with the highest GPA (3.77).

• Former Carson-Newman athletic director David Barger, who grew up in Red Bank, is going into the Jefferson City, Tenn., university's athletic hall of fame as well as the South Atlantic Conference hall this year. The Carson-Newman induction is this morning at 10, when Barger will be joined by football players Mark Isom (class of 1985) and Joe Fishback ('90) and basketballers Lib Julian ('58) and Jerry Cannon ('67). Julian also was a baseball star. Barger ('70) was a student athletic trainer and manager at Carson-Newman and returned after a banking career as director of athletic promotions. Ten years later, in 1990, he became AD and led the Eagles' transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. He retired last year and was named AD emeritus.

Baseball

• DeAndre Allen tripled and drove in three runs and Chase Edwards went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored as Cleveland State defeated Motlow 11-4 in TCCAA baseball Friday at Cleveland. Brandon Zajac pitched the first seven innings with two hits allowed and seven strikeouts for the Cougars (20-13, 8-7), scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh for a nine-run lead. Allen, Evan Speicher and Cory Collum each was 2-for-3, Collum with two RBIs and two runs. Ben Holland walked three times and homered for Motlow (19-16, 5-11).

• Scott Gillespie matched a Covenant College baseball record with six RBIs while going 3-for-3 with a home run and a double in a 15-3 home win Friday against Tennessee Temple. Andrew Beck was 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs and Perry Rigby hit a grand slam for Covenant (21-5), while Braeden Lane also homered and Will Cleland and David Lockwood each was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Micah Mabe (6-1) allowed two hits and struck out eight in six innings pitched. Trey Hill homered for Temple (15-13).

• With Derrick Pitts going 3-for-4 with a homer, a triple, a double, five RBIs and four runs scored, the NAIA's top-ranked Lee University baseball team routed visiting Talladega 15-1 on Friday. Corey Davis was 3-for-5 with a triple, a double and three RBIs and Karsten Strieby, Brady Renner and Mark Silva batted in two runs each for the Flames (31-8). Myles Smith (8-2) and three relievers allowed five hits. Today's doubleheader will be Military Appreciation Day with special gifts for veterans and active military personnel in attendance, a between-games ceremony and a silent auction of sports memorabilia included.

Softball

• Lee University beat visiting Truett-McConnell 4-0 and 8-0 in SSAC softball Friday with Angie Hughes (14-1) striking out 15 batters while allowing one hit in six innings in the opener and Caroline MacAusland and Katie Deems combining for a five-inning two-hitter. Lexie Dean and Dominique Hannah each was 3-for-5 for the day, Dean with two RBIs. Jennifer Ringle had a two-run pinch-hit home run in the opener and Charlie Wooden was 1-for-2 with two RBIs in game two for Lee (29-5, 14-2).

• Heather Daniel batted in five runs total and Rachel Kirby was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in each game as Bryan College swept St. Andrews 9-1 and 7-5 in AAC softball Friday. Alexsa Valdes and Kirstie Jennings each was 3-for-3 with two runs in the opener for Bryan (13-17, 5-7), when Daniel also scored twice, Taylor Yates was 2-for-2 and Shanna Chappell pitched a two-hitter. The Lady Lions scored five runs in their last two at-bats in the rematch, when Jennings and Daniel each was 2-for-4 and Valdes again scored twice.

Football

• The Tennessee Train women's tackle football team opens its inaugural season tonight in Jacksonville, Fla., against the Dixie Blues. The Train's home opener is next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hixson High School against the Savannah Sabers. General admission for home games will cost $10 with seniors and students admitted for $5 and ages 12-under free. Other teams' or retired women's players can get in free by wearing their jerseys.
