Silverdale Baptist Academy didn't have to go far to find its new girls' basketball coach.

Tim Thompson, an assistant coach last season and the middle school athletic director, has been named to take over for David Massengill, who resigned recently.

"I look forward to building on a successful, growing program at Silverdale," Thompson said. "We have a group of quality lady athletes at Silverdale who love the Lord and are seeking his best in their lives. Our mission as educators and coaches is to help them on that journey."

Thompson, a graduate of Peoria (Ill.) Christian School, began coaching at Silverdale in 2010 in the middle school program with boys' soccer and baseball and girls' basketball.

"We are ecxited at SBA to have Tim as our head ladies' basketball coach," athletic director Al Rogers said. "Not only is he a great coach, but more importantly he is a man of integrity and Christlike character. He is a student of the game. If I had a daughter, I would be honored to have him as her coach."

Phillips has UK TD

Former Signal Mountain all-state quarterback Reese Phillips, now a freshman at the University of Kentucky after leaving high school early, threw a touchdown pass in a recent spring scrimmage.

Phillips is expected to redshirt this fall.

"I spoke to him on the phone and he was excited about throwing the touchdown pass," Signal Mountain coach Bill Price said. "He's doing real good up there. Like any freshman, it will take a little time to adjust to the speed at that level, but there's no doubt Reese has the ability to be a player for them."

NFF honor for Boyd

Tim Boyd, who represents East Ridge as Hamilton County commissioner from District 8, has won the George L. Hunter Distinguished Service Award given by the East Tennessee chapter of the National Football Foundation.

Boyd was nominated by East Ridge football coach Tracy Malone, who noted that in the last nine months the commissioner has given more than $20,000 to the Pioneers program. Those donations have helped improvements at the high school and in the East Ridge Middle School football program and East Ridge youth leagues.

Boyd will receive the award at an April 20 banquet in Knoxville before the University of Tennessee's Orange and White spring football game. Texas coach Mack Brown and ESPN analyst Lee Corso also will be honored at the banquet.
