Andrew Wilson Jr. fired his .45-caliber Sig Sauer nine times until Desmond McClure fell dead, he told police.
Wilson struck McClure seven times, a Hamilton County medical examiner's report shows.
McClure, 28, was killed outside an event hall at 2510 E. Main St. on April 2 after an argument over a woman, authorities said. The building was rented out to host a bachelor party that night, according to a police report.
McClure had gunshot wounds to his torso and legs, according to diagrams in the report.
He was a father to six children.
A man in the front yard of McClure's listed residence in Highland Park on Tuesday said the family was not ready to talk.
Wilson, 28, was arrested last week on charges of criminal homicide and tampering with evidence. As of Tuesday he remained locked up at the Hamilton County Jail on a $75,000 bond. His first court appearance is set for Thursday before General Sessions Court Judge David Bales.
Two other men were involved in the argument, according to an arrest report. Neither has been charged. Wilson alleged that McClure was armed with a revolver. He reportedly took the revolver and fled shortly after the shooting, according to the incident report.
There have been 10 homicides in Chattanooga this year, and detectives have made six arrests in those cases, records show.
