Kiddie Olympics accepting registrations

Preschool kids who want to run, jump and sweat at the inaugural Kiddie Olympics at Finley Stadium have until Tuesday, April 16, to register.

The event, scheduled 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, May 16, is open to children ages 3 to 5 years old. They must be registered by their day-care centers and preschools.

Dr. Andre Hardy, one of the event's organizers, said the goal is to combat childhood obesity.

"We teach them about fitness now (while they're young), so they will live fit," he said. "A day of physical fitness and awareness is just what these kids need."

In 2007, 500 kids in the Atlanta area competed in the first event, which was founded by University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduates Derrick and Catrina McLendon. Last year, more than 2,500 children competed. This will be the first year in Chattanooga.
