ATLANTA - Police say they're continuing to investigate why a motorist driving a luxury car was gunned down on an interstate outside Atlanta.

Authorities say the unidentified man was shot Thursday evening inside a black Maybach on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County. The car had a Florida license tag and a front plate stating "Blessed."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that an off-duty Atlanta police had stopped after noticing gunshot damage to the car. All the doors were locked, so the officer broke a rear window to help the wounded motorist inside. The motorist was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

DeKalb County Police spokeswoman Mekka Parish says witnesses told investigators shots were fired at the luxury sedan from a white SUV that fled the scene.

Many Maybachs sell for $400,000 and more.
