Jenna Nurik became the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's first four-time All-Southern Conference women's tennis player with her 2013 first-team selection announced Tuesday, and Manuel Barroetavena from the men's team became a rare No. 2 singles player on the all-conference first team. But he was 15-4 in the spring dual season with an 8-2 SoCon record. Fellow seniors Ankit Chopra and Roberto Vieira made the men's second team in doubles, and Lady Mocs freshman Kelsey Coots was a second-team women's pick and joined by Kayla Jones on the all-freshman team. The Lady Mocs (17-4, 6-4) are seeded sixth for the conference tournament and open against Western Carolina on Thursday at Elon. The UTC men (11-8, 6-4) have a first-round bye and face UNC Greensboro at 9 a.m. Friday.
• Both Sewanee tennis teams will be seeded No. 1 in the Southern Athletic Association tournament. Sewanee remained undefeated in league play by winning 8-1 over the Millsaps women and 6-3 over the Millsaps men Saturday in Jackson, Miss., and their regular-season league finales Sunday at Birmingham-Southern were canceled because of bad weather. The SAA tournament will run April 26-28 in Murfreesboro.
Football
• Former University of Chattanooga football star and local high school coach Carey Henley died Monday at age 76 at his East Ridge home. Visitation is set for 4-8 p.m. today at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, and a graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the National Cemetery. Henley came to UC from West Point, Miss., and was a Little All-American who played one season with the Buffalo Bills in the American Football League. He served as head football coach and athletic director at Kirkman, Brainerd and Tyner and spent the last 22 years working at WindStone Golf Club.
Baseball
• The top-ranked Lee University baseball team celebrated learning that it will host an NAIA tournament opening series (May 9-13) for the fifth year in a row by beating Bryan College 13-3 on Tuesday. Mark Silva and Corey Davis each was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double, plus three and two RBIs, and Derek Pitts had a three-run double in support of winning pitcher Clint Terry for the Flames (37-9). Brandon Rader and Brady Renner each was 2-for-4 and scored twice. Josh Harris was 3-for-3 with a home and three RBIs for Bryan, while Grant Zawadzki was 2-for-4.
• The Covenant College baseball team won 6-1 and lost 7-5 against visiting Berry on Tuesday. Alhanon Miller (6-1) was the Scots' winning pitcher with a three-hitter, and David Lockwood and Sterling Witt each was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game and had two RBIs in the Covenant loss; Witt had a homer in each game.
• Volunteer State won 9-6 at Cleveland State in a nonconference baseball team matching TCCAA programs Tuesday. The Pioneers scored eight runs in the first four innings. Cleveland State (24-17) stranded 14 baserunners in the game but got RBI singles from Evan Speicher and DeAndre Allen and other types of RBIs from Cody Hiefnar, Chase Edwards and Keith Buckhault.
Softball
• East Carolina freshman Meredith Mitchell from Sequatchie County helped the visiting Lady Pirates to a weekend sweep over Marshall, which had entered the series 11-4 in Conference USA. Mitchell stole a base and scored two runs in the 11-1 first game Saturday and then went 3-for-4 with a triple, two steals, three RBIs and three runs in a 17-6 victory. She also threw out a runner at home from center field. ECU (18-24, 8-7), directed by former Chattanooga State coach Beth Keylon-Randolph, completed the sweep with a 10-4 win Sunday, when Mitchell was 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run. She is batting .298 overall and .359 in C-USA games.
• The Lee University softball team whipped visiting Georgia Gwinnett 9-0 and 10-0 on Tuesday as starting pitchers Angie Hughes and Katie Deems each allowed two hits in four innings and Hannah Hight pitched the fifth in each game. Ana Coscorrosa was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in the opener for Lee (36-7), when Dezirae Parsons was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and one RBI and Laurel Allen went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Allen and Amanda Lynn each was 2-for-2 and scored twice in game two, Lynn with a triple and two RBIs, and Lexie Dean was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Charlie Wooden and Jennifer Ringle each drove in two runs also.
• Megan Roysden and Kayla Phillips combined on a five-inning one-hitter and Carley Daniel and Phillips followed with a five-inning three-hitter as the Tennessee Temple softball team won 13-0 and 12-1 Tuesday at Wesleyan in Macon, Ga. Phillips and Amanda Rector had two hits in each game and totaled three RBIs apiece for Temple (21-14). Haley Huskey was 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one; Bree Smith was 3-for-3 and Daniel was 2-for-2 with an RBI in the rematch.
