Lady Mocs win easily in SoCon tennis event and other sports news

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's tennis team had a first-round bye in the Southern Conference tournament and opens play this morning at 9, while the UTC women had to open Thursday but made it seem like a bye with a 4-0 win over Western Carolina at Elon. WCU (1-16) had only five players available so forfeited a doubles match and a singles match. The Lady Mocs (18-4) didn't even use their usual top two players but breezed to the doubles point and wrapped up the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles by freshmen Kelsey Coots and Kayla Jones. They face Furman at 11 this morning.

Baseball

• The Chattanooga State baseball team lost its advantage at the top of the TCCAA standings by squandering 8-1 and 8-3 leads and falling 9-8 and 13-11 in the doubleheader last week at Jackson State, but the Tigers won the series finale 8-4 behind pitcher Colton Kinnamon and beat area four-year schools' junior varsities this week in preparing for this weekend's league series at home against Columbia State. Shortstop Jordan McDonald and double-play mate Marquis Webb each had three hits, McDonald with a home run, in a 6-1 win over Bryan, and Tyler Garner was 4-for-5 in the follow-up 13-0 win. Blake Davenport and Mark Harris were the winning pitchers. The Tigers won 11-1 and led 1-0 in a suspended game Wednesday against Covenant.

Softball

• Senior catcher Bri Shoemake from Ooltewah High School was one of three Carson-Newman softball players to be first-team All-South Atlantic Conference, including player of the year Brittany Hefner. Shoemake batted .369 in the regular season with 33 runs scored and a league-high 18 runners thrown out (50 percent). She and Ridgeland graduate Caitlyn Lance had two of the Lady Eagles' three hits in a 4-1 loss to Catawba in the league tournament Thursday. Carson-Newman had no second-team All-SAC selections.
