Now is the time to act on health care and other letters to the editors

Now is the time to act on health care

Act Now. If Tennessee's political leaders can hammer out a "Tennessee Plan" that meets federal laws, hundreds of thousands of working families, including veterans, will receive much-needed health care beginning in 2014.

The best part, Tennessee will take in $1 billion (according to the General Assembly's fiscal note). That will be far more tax dollars than we Tennesseans will pay out.

But we must act now. If this chance passes, we may never repair the damage. The first program year, 2014, brings the maximum federal contribution (100 percent). After that, the contribution goes down to 90 percent in 2021 and stays there.

The program is endorsed by such groups as the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry, BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee and the United Methodist Church of Tennessee.

Don't let partisan politics bamboozle you. Tell the governor. Tell your legislators. We need to be competitive with other states and the world. Don't let worthy Tennesseans be left behind.

What can you do right now? Call or email Gov. Haslam and your legislators. Visit them personally. Write letters to editors. Ask your friends to join you.

This moment counts.

Feel-good Christianity not pleasing to God

Try finding many churches in the Chattanooga area where traditional songs and sermons on sin and repentance are preached on a given Sunday morning, A daunting task for sure. "Amazing Grace," "Softly and Tenderly," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and others are relegated to the storage rooms in dusty forgotten hymnals.

If we have other weekly services at all, we assign our traditional quiet reverence for God to small classrooms appeasing our old folks to keep their tithes and offerings coming in, while we appeal to the young in our sanctuaries. The era of feel-good religion (Rick Warren style) has taken over most churches.

We're trading the deep spiritual services of a Billy Sunday, Graham, Moody, Spurgeon, and songs of a Bev Shea and Sankey for man's business-approach to worship.

Times have changed, they say. No they have changed. Don't believe me? Ask to see their salaries and benefits! God cannot be pleased!

Men need to step up and be responsible

Since I was reading about Pope Francis backing the crackdown on American nuns for -- among other things -- not fighting abortion, I am saying to all the men who don't support abortion for any cause, it is time to take responsibility for male reproduction actions.

In the cases of rape or incest, a male is 100 percent responsible. In the cases of unwanted pregnancies, the male is 50 percent responsible. All men, including religious men should teach their sons, brothers, uncles, fathers, etc. that if they don't want an additional child to support or bring into this world, they should show responsibility and use protection or keep away. We are into the 21st century. It is past time for the men to step up and help solve this problem.

We all hear about the welfare queen, who supposedly has children to make more money (not factual), but what about the man who has several children by different women and supports none of them? The blame for the children is placed at the woman's feet. Now is the time to place blame where it lies. Men, step up and show responsibility.

Thank you for the columns by Dr. Thomas Sowell and Dr. Walter Williams that were published on April 14. They are, in my opinion, the foremost experts on economics and race in the USA.

Gun votes by Corker, Alexander illogical

Republican Sen. Pat Toomey, co-sponsor of the Manchin-Toomey Bill referred to it as "not gun control but common sense." On Wednesday, despite the support of 90 percent of the American public, both Senators Corker and Alexander chose to vote against common sense and thus enable the criminally insane, serial rapists and al-Qaida to continue to purchase guns at gun shows and over the Internet unchecked. And contrary to the NRA, the bill does not require background checks on citizen-to-citizen purchases and actually criminalizes a gun registry.

I contacted the offices of both senators inquiring why they chose to ignore the will of the public, Sen. Corker could offer no explanation, while Sen. Alexander's office says the bill was "vague and ineffective," indicating support for the Grassley-Cruz Amendment. But that amendment does absolutely nothing to close the loophole.

In 2011, al-Qaida spokesman Adam Gadahn stated, "America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?"

I'm sure he appreciates the senator's support.

Letter writer wrong on Bible references

I defend Robin Smith's column on April 8, and I challenge Wes Giglio's understanding of Scripture. The Bible certainly does not condone slavery, polygamy, torture, murder of women and children, nor human sacrifice!

Yes, there are references to these atrocities in Scripture, but it certainly doesn't mean that God condones these actions. On the contrary, God is against such atrocities. He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death. (Exodus 21:16)

You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods; for they burn even their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. (Deuteronomy 12:31)

Since I'm limited to 200 words, I am unable to refute each reference Mr. Giglio mentioned. Suffice it to say, according to God's word, Mr. Giglio is as wrong as wrong can be. How do I know this? 1 Timothy 1:8-11 is how I know.

And regarding human sacrifice: Jesus freely gave His life that we may be saved from all sin.

Letter writer wrong on Bible references

True True True!

Let me explain something to You Jesus Christ Haters.

Jesus Christ said about Himself, "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Saint John 8:36

What blatant ignorance of Holy Scripture can interpret this to mean YHWH supports slavery???

Jesus Christ said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, TO PREACH DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVES, and recovering of sight to the blind, TO SET AT LIBERTY THEM THAT ARE BRUISED,To preach the acceptable year of the Lord."Saint Luke 4:17-19

What blatant ignorance of Holy Scripture can interpret this to mean YHWH supports slavery???

***9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for THE LAWLESS AND DISOBEDIENT , FOR THE UNGODLY AND FOR SINNERS, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, FOR MENSTEALERS, for liars, for perjured persons, AND IF THERE BE ANY OTHER THING THAT IS CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE;

11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust." 1 Timothy 1:9-11***

What blatant ignorance of Holy Scripture can interpret this to mean YHWH supports slavery???

Regarding my previous post about The Holy Bible categorizing MENSTEALERS along with THE UNGODLY AND SINNERS. And also that SLAVERY is CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE WITHIN THE HOLY BIBLE (Which is all True):

If Wes Giglio was speaking about Slavery Practices within Islam, then I stand corrected. I do read in the Hadith of Islam that:

"If a woman and her daughter were both slaves (or captive) then you can't have sex with one of them after the other." Umar forbade this practice-(Malik's Muwatta 28.14.33) From Islamic Hadith.

RE: The Manchin-Toomey Bill, I think at the bare minimum Senators Corker and Alexander owe the public and explanation as to why the "nay" vote on common sense gun safety, but of course we all know the real reason was they are petrified of the NRA and losing their "A" Rating.

I guess an "A" rating with the NRA is more important to them, than an "A" rating from 90% of their constituents.

Don't think either will be getting the Profiles In Courage Award any time soon :(

Read the whole Bible, Ken Orr. Your blatant ignorance of your own holy book is laughable.

Exodus 21:2-6

When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.

Exodus 21:7-11

“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has broken faith with her. If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter. If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights. And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

Exodus 21:20-21

“When a man strikes his slave, male or female, with a rod and the slave dies under his hand, he shall be avenged. But if the slave survives a day or two, he is not to be avenged, for the slave is his money.

Leviticus 19:20

“If a man lies sexually with a woman who is a slave, assigned to another man and not yet ransomed or given her freedom, a distinction shall be made. They shall not be put to death, because she was not free;

Leviticus 25:44-26

As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever. You may make slaves of them,

1 Timothy 6:1-2

All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered. Those who have believing masters should not show them disrespect just because they are fellow believers. Instead, they should serve them even better because their masters are dear to them as fellow believers and are devoted to the welfare of their slaves.

Read the whole Bible, Ken Orr. Your blatant ignorance of your own holy book is laughable.

Ephesians 5:5-8

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

Titus 2:9-10

Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

1 Peter 2:18-20

Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God.

"And also that SLAVERY is CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE WITHIN THE HOLY BIBLE"

As you can see from my previous posts, slavery is some of the most sound Biblical doctrine there is.

"If Wes Giglio was speaking about Slavery Practices within Islam, then I stand corrected. I do read in the Hadith of Islam that:"

You stand corrected on everything you say because everything you say is either false or misleading.

"If a woman and her daughter were both slaves (or captive) then you can't have sex with one of them after the other." Umar forbade this practice-(Malik's Muwatta 28.14.33) From Islamic Hadith."

Sounds familiar:

Exodus 21:7-11

“When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do. If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has broken faith with her. If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter. If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights. And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

This is your Bible outlining the sexual enslavement of a man's daughter and how "masters" should go about that process.

No, No, No Easy123, You are absolutely wrong! You do err, not knowing the Scriptures.

Every New Testament Scripture You quoted Only instructs the person who finds themselves in the wrongful condition of slaver on how to behave as a slave.

This is sound Biblical/Godly wisdom. This instruction demonstrates to the slave how to keep themselves from further evil (slavery). The Scriptures You quoted are also letting the slave know that he/she is to behave in a Godly manner even though in the evils of their bondage. The slave is to be a soul winner, to win their 'master' to Christ Jesus.

Easy , the Holy Scriptures tell us, "Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth."

And also that SLAVERY is CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE WITHIN THE HOLY BIBLE (Which is all True) .Jesus Christ changed so very much in the Old Testament due to dispensations. Please consider doing a Biblical study on dispensations.

Orr,

"No, No, No Easy123, You are absolutely wrong! You do err, not knowing the Scriptures."

I'm absolutely right. I do not err.

"Every New Testament Scripture You quoted Only instructs the person who finds themselves in the wrongful condition of slaver on how to behave as a slave."

Thus condoning the act of slavery.

"This is sound Biblical/Godly wisdom."

So you're saying slavery is sound Biblical/Godly wisdom?

"This instruction demonstrates to the slave how to keep themselves from further evil (slavery)."

No, it doesn't.

"The Scriptures You quoted are also letting the slave know that he/she is to behave in a Godly manner even though in the evils of their bondage."

Those verses saying nothing about the "evils of their bondage". You have added that part to suit your own beliefs.

"The slave is to be a soul winner, to win their 'master' to Christ Jesus."

It doesn't say that anywhere in you holy book. Again, you have conjured that up to suit your beliefs.

"Easy , the Holy Scriptures tell us, "Study to show ourselves approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth."

You should take your own advice. Also, stop making stuff up. Read your own holy book. You seem to be egregiously ignorant of its contents.

Orr,

"Easy123, what are You talking about on your final reference from Exodus? What...are...You...talking about??? That says nothing about sex!"

The implication is sexual. Go ahead, look it up.

"Look a little closer. Look, and, look again."

Take your own advice. Look a little closer, Ken. Then take your head out of your ass and look again.

"The Holy Bible categorized MENSTEALERS along with THE UNGODLY AND SINNERS."

What about men-buyers? Considering slaves are bought and not stolen, you "menstealers" statement would apply more to kidnappers.

"And also that SLAVERY is CONTRARY TO SOUND DOCTRINE WITHIN THE HOLY BIBLE (Which is all True) "

I have provided numerous examples that contradict that very statement. Slavery is some of the most sound Biblical doctrine there is.

"Jesus Christ changed so very much in the Old Testament due to dispensations. Please consider doing a Biblical study on dispensations."

Dispensations are Christians trying to rationalize the Old Testament. Your fictional Jesus didn't change anything.

Matthew 5:17-18

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished”
