A multiple-vehicle accident earlier this afternoon shut down Interstate 24 eastbound near the Rossville Boulevard exit and led to one fatality.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m., involved a tractor-trailer and shut down all three eastbound lanes of traffic, according to Tennessee Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer Flynn.

The driver of a Toyota that police said hit the tractor-trailer was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead

About 6 p.m., two of the three lanes of I-24 that were closed to traffic were reopened.

A release from the Chattanooga Police Department said the investigation is continuing and added information will be released when it becomes available.
