Despite finding themselves down a point in their region match against Baylor on Wednesday, the McCallie tennis team never lost sight of the bigger goal.

And they didn't waste much time reaching it.

The Blue Tornado jumped out to one-set leads in five of the six singles match, taking wins on the first three that came off the court as they defeated the Red Raiders 4-3 at the Zan Guerry Tennis Center.

McCallie (7-4, 2-1) got straight set wins from Cody Gubin, Aaron Speicher, Turner Voges and Carter Eaves. The latter didn't play when the two teams played a non-region match recently, but Gubin took a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jack Gray in a reversal of the first meeting.

"My serve was on, and I dictated more of the points," he said. "I thought I competed a lot harder and was more into the match this time."

Voges' 6-3, 6-3 win clinched the team victory for the Blue Tornado.

Baylor's two wins came in three-set matches claimed by Marko Mandic and Chad Woodham -- both of whom lost matches when the two teams played the first time. Mandic, who was down in each set, rallied back to defeat Daniel Pare 6-7 (7-4), 6-3, (10-8), while Woodham beat Luke Orthner 6-3, 3-6, (10-4).

The Red Raiders (4-6, 1-2) won two of the three doubles matches Mandic and Gray won at No. 1 doubles, while Woodham and Cooper Long were victorious at No. 3. McCallie's lone doubles win was by Gubin and Speicher at No. 2.

"There were 12 good players on the court today," McCallie coach Eric Voges said. "It was a good sign for us to take first sets in five of the six matches -- that's a good sign because it's never good to lose the doubles point.

"The guys knew they had to win four of the six singles matches, and they went out and got it done."
