Minivan driver killed by flying tire on I-85 near Atlanta

ATLANTA — Authorities say a tire from a truck that flew over a freeway median near Atlanta struck and killed the driver of a minivan heading the opposite direction.

DeKalb County police say the accident happened during the morning rush hour, around 8:30 a.m., on Interstate 85 south of Shallowford Road.

Police said a Dodge pickup truck was heading north on I-85 south when one of its tires flew off and over the median wall. The tire struck the driver of a minivan that was in a southbound lane.

WSB-TV reports that the 47-year-old female driver was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

A 16-year-old passenger was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for evaluation.
