Police car hits Georgia girl, 14, riding a bike

MCDONOUGH, Ga. - Authorities say a 14-year-old girl suffered serious injuries when she was struck by a police car struck in metro Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports a Henry County police officer hit the teenager with his patrol car as she was exiting a driveway on her bicycle Saturday afternoon.

Henry County police Sgt. Joey Smith says the officer "could not avoid the accident," which happened as he was going on duty. Smith says the officer is "very distraught."

The injured girl was air-lifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Her name was not immediately released.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the collision.
