Civil War lecture in Athens - Aug. 3

A lecture offered Saturday, Aug. 3, at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum in Athens, Tenn., will be a preview for an upcoming exhibit.

The lecture, titled “The Athens Raid: The Capture and Death of Major John McGaughey in 1865,” will be presented at noon by B.E. “Mullie” LeNoir. McGaughey was a deputy provost marshal and former justice of the peace who was captured and killed by the Confederates, according to museum records. He is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Athens.

The upcoming exhibition is “Common People in Uncommon Times: The Civil War Experience in Tennessee,” a traveling exhibit sponsored by the Tennessee State Museum. It will be on view at the Living Heritage Museum, 522 W. Madison Ave., from Aug. 29 through Sept. 5.

Admission for Saturday’s event is free. The dulcimer ensemble Harmony and GRITS (Girls Raised in the South) will provide musical entertainment.
