Alternative rock band Remedy Drive and master illusionist Jared Hall will headline Rock the Block, a Christian music festival to provide Scottsboro, Ala.-area children with materials for school.

The event, scheduled 4-10 p.m. CDT Saturday, Aug. 3, also will feature David Ashley Trent, RyanJohn, Ben Nelson Band, The Mercy Project and a dramatic skit by Scottsboro Community Church of God.

According to organizers, Rock the Block was founded in 2009 when individuals from churches in the greater Jackson County area of Alabama came together to help families struggling to prepare for school. Since that time, the event has provided thousands of dollars in materials that have been distributed to hundreds of students.

Admission to the show is free. Those attending are asked to bring school supplies to donate, lawn chairs or blankets for seating and money for food and merchandise (an event T-shirt is $15).

Supply lists for individual schools and grade levels can be found at www.rock-the-block-net. The most-needed supplies are backpacks, wide-rule paper, kids scissors, copy paper and crayons.

School supplies also may be dropped off at the following Scottsboro businesses: Walmart, Dollar General, Servpro of Jackson and DeKalb counties. Financial donations may be made at Piggly Wiggly.
