Cedartown crash leaves child dead, driver fled

CEDARTOWN, Ga. - Police say a man driving a car with two children crashed, pulled the kids out of the vehicle and then ran away.

State patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said one of the children, a 6-year-old boy, was killed and a 5-year-old girl was seriously injured in the one-car wreck Sunday morning.

Wright said the man was driving a 2009 Pontiac G6 along Tallapoosa Highway near Cedartown Sunday morning when ithe car veered off the road, hit a ditch and overturned.

Wright said a witness told troopers the driver, 42-year-old Robert Nelson Wood, of Tallapoosa, pulled two children from the car and ran away.

The girl was being treated at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital at Erlanger in Chattanooga.

Wright says a state patrol helicopter is searching for Wood.
