Singing competition in Athens seeks 14 contestants - Aug. 12

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

It doesn’t have the national exposure of “American Idol” or “The Voice,” but for one area singer, an open-mike night at The Arts Center in Athens, Tenn., could be a springboard to a headlining gig on the Black Box Theatre stage.

The competition will take place on Friday, Aug. 16, and performers (8 and older) must register in advance by Monday, Aug. 12, either by email at director@athensartscouncil.org or by phone at 423-745-8781.

Acts must be 8 or older and may perform as solo, duo, trio or quartet. Full bands are not eligible for the contest but may submit CDs to be considered for future shows. Each act may perform two songs and must have live accompaniment (no tracks).

Registration is limited to 14 acts. On the night of the competition, a panel of judges and members of the audience will vote to decide which three acts will be considered for a headlining gig in the center’s House Blend Concert Series. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the free show. Concessions will be available for purchase
