North Alabama pilot makes emergency landing at Columbia airport

A small plane has successfully made an emergency landing at the downtown Columbia airport.

The plane came down late Monday afternoon without its landing gear deployed at Hamilton-Owens Airport.

The pilot was the only person on board and he was not hurt in the belly landing. There was no fire.

The 53-year-old Piper PA-24-250 made about five low-level passes over the general-aviation airport before the landing.

The plane left Fort Payne, Ala., for the flight to Columbia. The pilot's name was not released.

It was not clear why the landing gear malfunctioned.
