Chattanooga police are still searching for a suspect responsible for shooting a 16-year-old pregnant girl at East Lake Court housing projects this morning, said Master Patrol Officer Nathan Hartwig.

The girl sustained non-life threatening injuries to her lower back. She was standing outside along with a group of people when someone in a dark SUV fired off shots. Police were called at 11:13 a.m. to the 2243 E. 25th Street.

"We need protection. We fear for our lives," said Jet Rose, a near-by resident, who said shootings plague the housing complex.

Residents reported hearing at least five gunshots. Police on scene estimate there were at least eight gunshots, possibly with a 9mm or a .40 caliber gun.

Hartwig said it's unclear if the teen was the intended target or what the motive was in the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Chattanooga police at 698-2525.
