Kevin Rodden earned the $1,500 top prize in the Super Pro class Saturday night at the Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip, and Ron Lane won the new 275 Heads-Up class and $1,000. Lane, who owns Ron's Classic Cars in Soddy-Daisy, won with his 1972 Datsun 240 powerd by a 406 modified Chevrolet engine in a time of 5.51 seconds at 131 mph. Tony Taylor was second in a 1992 Mustang. Rodden won his class with a 5.98 run on a 5.98 dial in a 1977 Chevy Vega, and Tony Helms was second with a 5.10 on a 5.08 dial in the George Gossett dragster. David Bigham of Calhoun, Ga., won the Foot Brake class in a 1969 Dodge; Melvin Croft was second in his 1965 Plymouth. Jake Clayton won the Junior Dragster class with a 7.90 run on a 7.88 dial with a 1-cylinder Briggs & Stratton motor tuned by his father Mike, a former IHRA Super Gas world champion; Kaleb Winters was second.

Softball

• The men's slowpitch softball team sponsored by The Athletic Shop in Red Bank and managed by Garrett Reagan finished fourth in the ISA Wooden Bat World Series this past weekend in Sevierville, Tenn. Reagan's team upset the North Carolina wood bat state champion, Aftershock, by an 18-13 score, and Wade Palmer and Ray Pollard finished first and second in the "home run king" standings with six and five homers in five games. The Athletic Shop team earlier was fifth in the ISA men's open state and has qualified for the World Softball League world tournament in Panama City, Fla., in September. The team is 44-20-1 in open tournaments this year, and its league version went 16-2 in the Soddy-Daisy men's open league and won the Softball of Summit A Division with a 15-1 record.

Golf

• Casey Truelove for the class of 2014 and Hunter Cornelius for the class of 2015 are among the Renewing Yates Scholars announced Monday by the GSGA Foundation. The Yates Scholarship Program provides college funds to GSGA member club employees and employees' dependents, and Moncrief Scholarships help potential course superintendents pursue agronomy and turf management degrees. Moncrief recipients include Cohutta residents Michael Allmon and Kodey Cross and Trion's Eric Simpson as 2013 graduating scholars at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Blairsville's Colten Beattie as a new honoree for the University of Georgia. Truelove represents Nob North Golf Club and attends the University of North Georgia, while Cornelius from Battlefield Golf Club attends and plays golf for the College of Coastal Georgia as a Barnsley Gardens Named Scholar.
