'God is Dead!' art will stay at Georgia high school

COVINGTON, Ga. - Administrators at a Georgia high school said there are no plans to remove student artwork with the proclamation that "God is Dead!" despite complaints from at least one parent.

Crystal Mitchell told WAGA-TV that the artwork in a classroom at Alcovy High School in Covington upset her 10th-grade daughter. She said the piece doesn't belong in a public school.

Newton County School System officials said language arts students created the drawings, and the artwork's statement that "God is dead" is from a quote in Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible."

Fort Payne, Ala., plane has emergency

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A small plane successfully made an emergency landing at the downtown Columbia airport.

The plane came down late Monday afternoon without its landing gear deployed at Hamilton-Owens Airport.

The pilot was the only person on board and he was not hurt in the belly landing. There was no fire.

The 53-year-old Piper PA-24-250 made about five low-level passes over the general-aviation airport before the landing.

The plane left Fort Payne, Ala., for the flight to Columbia. The pilot's name was not released.

Downtown Atlanta slaying suspect charged

ATLANTA - Police said they've apprehended a suspect in the shooting death of a man near Underground Atlanta.

Brandon Barnes, 25, of Stone Mountain, faces a murder charge, Atlanta police Officer John Chafee said early Tuesday. Jail records do not indicate whether he has an attorney.

The man who was killed was shot several times during a dispute with another person Monday afternoon, and was later pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital. Chafee said the victim and the suspect argued inside the shopping complex before the dispute escalated once they were outside.

Awning falls at McDonald's restaurant

TUCKER, Ga. - Building inspectors and authorities in metro Atlanta are trying to determine what caused a 100-foot awning to collapse at a McDonald's restaurant.

WSB-TV reported the section of the roof hanging over the restaurant's entrances crashed to the ground Tuesday. DeKalb County Fire Chief Edward O'Brien said no injuries were reported and no vehicles were damaged.

O'Brien said it's fortunate no one was standing beneath the awning when it collapsed because "it's a very heavy section."

Building inspectors have been called in to assist investigators. The restaurant is expected to be closed for further investigation and repairs.
