photo Chattanooga barbecue master James Hands will prepare the barbecue for the Sale Creek Lions Club's annual fundraiser.

Two area service organizations will offer up barbecue with a side of music in separate events Saturday, Aug. 17.

Bluegrass is on the bill for the Harrison Ruritan Club, gospel for the Sale Creek Lions Club.

• Harrison Ruritan Club: The club's monthly Bluegrass Jamboree coincides with its 21st annual all-day barbecue fundraiser at the clubhouse at 5709 Tyner Lane (across from Central High School).

The meal of barbecue, baked beans, slaw, bread, tea or coffee will be priced at $7. Serving will start at 11 a.m. and last until 9 p.m.

Scheduled to perform are the Tin Cup Rattlers, 6 p.m.; Grass Harpers, 6:50 p.m.; McGill & Company, 7:40 p.m.; and Scenic City Ramblers, 8:30 p.m.

Proceeds will be used for various community-service projects. Those attending are also asked to donate school supplies for Harrison Elementary. Among the items most needed are No. 2 pencils, Crayola crayons (12 or 24 packs), wide-rule spiral notebooks, glue sticks, Expo dry-erase markers, antibacterial hand sanitizer, backpacks, three-ring folders with pockets, tissues and bandages.

• Sale Creek Lions Club: Also an annual event, the Lions barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the clubhouse at 15222 Coppinger Road (behind Sale Creek Middle/High School).

As he has for the past several years, Chattanooga barbecue master James Hands will take charge of the meat. Club members will complete the meal with baked beans, coleslaw and buns. A plate is priced at $6. Desserts and drinks will cost an extra $1 each.

Performing will be Anthem Voices, 11 a.m.; Calvary's Blend, noon; Jim Ricketts, 1 p.m; Willow Creek, 2 p.m.; and Southern Heart, 3 p.m.
