2013 - Bradley Central Bears

Friday, August 16, 2013

photo Bradley Central quarterback Brett Standifer will take over the Bears' offense this season after transferring from Soddy-Daisy.

Coach: Damon Floyd (37-37 here and overall)

Last year: 6-5, losing 42-22 to McMinn County in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs

'13 dreams: Because of the bar set by Floyd, the expectation will be no different than in previous seasons - to compete for the district championship. The Bears have fallen a game short of that goal the past three seasons, but with only a couple of question marks about positions needing to be filled, they should be in contention again.

13-for-13 contenders: Quarterback Brett Standifer is the heir apparent to Bryce Copeland, a four-year starter who finished in the top 10 of all-time total offense in the state of Tennessee. Standifer started for three seasons at Soddy-Daisy and threw for more than 3,000 yards before transferring. Receivers Cal Pickel and Dee Crisp and tailback Logan Fetzner all had big games last season, with Fetzner going over the 200-yard mark in the season opener.

Number of interest: 13 - It's been a while since the Bears have played 13 games in a season - the equivalent of advancing to the state quarterfinals. Matter of fact, it's been 13 years.

13 years ago: The 2000 season was a special one for the Bears. They won nine games and lost only to Baylor and McCallie and twice to eventual state champion Red Bank. Bradley was led by Mr. Football finalist Blake Morris, who rushed for more than 2,500 yards and eclipsed the 4,000-yard career mark his final year, and quarterback Al Morris (no relation).
