Hamilton County Schools' enrollment has bounced back, with nearly 2,000 students showing up for class between the opening day on Aug. 8 and Wednesday's fifth day of school.

Countywide enrollment for the first day came in 320 students short of last year, with four high schools seeing significant drops.

But by Wednesday, the county's enrollment had reached 41,950. That's just 63 students shy from the same time last year.

Hamilton County's school enrollment generally increases during the first month of classes. Head counts are given at schools periodically through the 20th day of school. That day's enrollment is what determines state funding for the school system.

Last year's 20th-day enrollment count of 42,705 was the highest in recent history and a total increase of about 500 students over 2011.
