about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Equality between the multimillionaire golfing CEO who from the White House runs a quarter of the US economy, and the rest of us? Is he on Obamacare?

A deep problem with equalizing money by force is that it requires non-equal Equalizers. Are you and I equal to the IRS? Those who want to redistribute money have to, and want to, redistribute power to themselves, which makes inequality worse and not better. So abandon the very ideal of equalizing by force: even on its own terms it makes things worse.

People aren't equal--shall I throw a temper tantrum or a pity party because, being a man, I'll never be pregnant?--but some artificial inequalities can be gotten rid of. Do lawyers and non-lawyers receive equal protection of law and equal courtesy in court? Should Tennessee stop protecting barbers and public schools from competition? Stop subsidizing Volkswagen at the expense of ordinary taxpayers? Stop subsidizing golf courses used by a minority of the people? The Institute for Justice (which got Tennessee's coffin monopoly stuck down) is all for competition, which puts not bureaucrats but ordinary citizens in charge.

Repent of coveting. It is sin; it is just plain wrong.

The government is not, cannot and has never been the successful equalizer. In fact government intervention exacerbates inequality. Assuring adequate and fair competition in a reasonably regulated free market is the best equalizer. Rapidly rising cost in education, healthcare, energy, the housing bubble and burst can all be traced to governments attempt to intervene and manipulate.

A congress full of lawyers and professional career politicians led by a community organizer supported by a staff of people primarily from the academia field that think they know best how to manage anything is frightening. They fail to describe the desired output and monitor it. Instead, those elected elite want to dictate the input then blame everyone else when the output is off target then they again think they know best how the process must be and tweak the input and again watch the disappointing results. Unfortunately they are applauded and encouraged by an ignorant electorate to do even more of what will not work.

So Al Gore, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Bill and Billary Clinton, Hussein Obama, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg has more money than their scores of Liberal sheep and the liberals only complain about CEO's money? This is another example of hypocritical liberal mental illness.

Fact

"From the, “you never hear about that from the media” file – Those “Evil, Rich People” that Democrats are always wailing about are actually – Democrats.

While I don’t agree in referring to rich people as “Evil”, Democrats are often making such accusations. But what most people don’t realize is that the Top 3 “richest” people in the country are all Democrats. This list includes: Bill Gates, Warren Buffett & Larry Ellison are all Democrats. Together, they are worth $126 Billion Dollars.

An analysis of the Top 20 Richest People in America (from Forbes Top 100) reveals that a full 60% are actually Democrats. Furthermore, if you look at it from a “family” point of view and not as individuals, that ratio widens even further to: 25% Republican / 75% Democrat."

The gap between rich and poor has widened since hussein obama has been in the White House and the liberal mental illness has liberals convinced it is the Republicans fault. Do you liberals not see that the democrat politicians want people poor and dependent on government? When people are dependent on government they can be controlled by government and these people living in government poverty will always vote for the democrats that enable them and treat them as victims.

These are facts that liberals hate.

I don't believe in wealth distribution but I am concerned that the jobs we have now are mostly service jobs, ones that take very little skill and pay very low wages. These are okay for teens, but families need good manufacturing, construction and other skilled work that provides wages that can support a family. We have sent the best manufacturing jobs overseas (something that unions must share some of the blame for) and replaced them with fast food restaurants. Service jobs will only pay more if we as Americans are willing to pay more for the products they provide. We have gotten used to large quantities of cheap goods, cheap fast food and low cost entertainment, we have forgotten how to buy quality and how to save up for quality goods.

Corporations do take advantage of their workers. If they didn't unions would have never come about. Some regulation is needed for safety, environmental protection, and fair practices. We need to find ways to reward companies who provide fairly for their workers (not overboard-that's in part what killed the US auto industry) and who buy American when ever possible. That will most likely fall to us, the consumer, who needs to understand that we can't have everything at rock bottom prices.

Unions don't have the members they used to for several reasons. A lot of companies won't allow their workers to unionize, the unions are specific to one type of industry are often more effective, and some unions deserved to lose their credibility due to over-the-top demands and practices that intimidate or coerce workers.

The best thing is for us to learn what companies treat workers, consumers and the environment appropriately. When you are dealing with small local businesses, that is pretty easy, but big corporations or businesses that feed wholesale distributors-not so much.

Pre-1980 we had rich, we had poor, and mostly we had in-between. The rich were not so rich by today's standards. The tax system then kept some semblance of perspective between the rich and everyone else. Not now. We now have thousands of 1%ers who can and have amassed vast sums far beyond the definition of rich. In our parallel culture we have all the rest of the country either slipping or falling into less and less ability keep up with a middle existence.

The rich didn't suddenly get smarter post-1980, they got the tax laws changed enough to effect the most massive transfer of wealth in US history. That transfer did not come from God or their talent, that transfer came directly from the rest of America. The rich took the middle class wealth because they could under the newly installed tax breaks for the rich. They didn't create new wealth, they transferred it from the rest of us.

We now have two Americas, the first has never had it so good, the second is dying. The signs are everywhere. We are watching America die. We scream and point fingers, but we don't get it. We can kiss America's aspirations goodbye, because we have lost the sense of decency and fairness that is requisite in a great nation.

Do you really think taxing the wealthy more will fix anything? The regulators and tax system must enable the creation of decent paying manufacturing jobs for those not wealthy to achieve a better lot in life. It will not happen and cannot happen with service jobs unless those service jobs are spawned due to manufacturing activity. The creation of wealth is not understood and not supported by those legal and social activist we elect to positions of influence. Yes, the tax system needs fixing and some should pay more than they do but that will do nothing except slow the rate of deterioration.

What nucanuck said is exactly right. Conservatives constantly whine about the evils of redistributing the wealth but the reason we have had such a widening income gap between the rich and everybody else from 1980 onward is because of the REDISTRIBUTING of the wealth upward by tax laws and policies that heavily favor the rich. Everything has been rigged to favor the super-rich and the multi-nationals.

While the corporations have a corporate tax rate that conservatives claim is too high, the truth is that what they actually pay in taxes, on account of all the loop holes and their ability to (legally) stash their profits in off-shore accounts, is ridiculously low. Many corporations end up paying NOTHING in income taxes. And those so-called wealthy "job creators" do not use their money to create jobs; rather they merely invest it and pay an obscenely low capital gains tax of 15%, which of course is much lower than what a middle class worker pays.

You conservatives keep whining about how the rich are already taxed to death but the fact is that they are enjoying and taking advantage of the lowest tax rates in our history and have done so for the past 30 years.

Trickle-down (or supply-side economics) doesn't work and it never has!

The rich do not create jobs! Sure, some few do, but the vast majority just take their money, invest it, and live their entire lives off the earnings from their ridiculously low-taxed investments.

A higher minimum wage does not create more unemployment! Not once, in the few times over the decades that the minimum wage has been raised has there been any correlation between rising unemployment and the rising minimum wage. Nor has it had any detrimental effect on the economy, neither in the short term nor the long term. But conservatives keep crying about how raising the minimum wage will destroy jobs and hurt small businesses.

Every argument the righties keep making is based on lies and wishful thinking and we have suffered from the deleterious effects of their anti-government preachments for over 30 years. Enough! We need someone with the courage of FDR, who welcomed the enmity of his conservative enemies. Obama is a pansy who is in bed with the banksters and the entire military-industrial-corporatist complex, and the rabid righties don't even have the good sense to see that he is more closely aligned with their destructive way of thinking than they give him credit for.

Really?!?! How do they do that?

The best thing is for us to learn what companies treat workers, consumers and the environment appropriately. When you are dealing with small local businesses, that is pretty easy, but big corporations or businesses that feed wholesale distributors-not so much.

They still have their brand name on the products

I don't believe in wealth distribution but

There’s alway a “But” isn’t here?

I am concerned that the jobs we have now are mostly service jobs, ones that take very little skill and pay very low wages. These are okay for teens, but families need good manufacturing, construction and other skilled work that provides wages that can support a family.

”skilled work that provides wages that can support a family” Could it be that our workforce became complacent when our manufacturing base ruled the world and didn’t acquire skills that would provide those wages in the global economy we find ourselves in?

We have sent the best manufacturing jobs overseas (something that unions must share some of the blame for) and replaced them with fast food restaurants.

Could it be that they migrated to areas of the world where they could be made less expensive and as good quality.

Service jobs will only pay more if we as Americans are willing to pay more for the products they provide. We have gotten used to large quantities of cheap goods, cheap fast food and low cost entertainment, we have forgotten how to buy quality and how to save up for quality goods.

You mean like a Chevy instead of a Honda. I know that Hondas are made here now but their system still produces the best vehicle. You’re not going to change human nature to acquire the best value for their money. Our economy is not prepared to compete in the economy that we find ourselves and all we do is moan about the opposition eating our lunch.

Corporations do take advantage of their workers. If they didn't unions would have never come about. Some regulation is needed for safety, environmental protection, and fair practices.

If unions came about due to corps. taking advantage of their workers then would the inverse also be true? Unions are losing members due to corps. treating their employees better? Could this be a result of changes in social standards as applied to workers and government labor rules? Have unions served their need and are no longer useful except as a campaign fund delivery system for Democrats?

Jt that is a lot of ground to cover:

Yes, some corporations don't allow unions. Several of the foreign car manufacturers don't. McDonalds had an interesting practice: when employees starting talking unions, the franchise would close and a new on would open, even right across the street.

By cheap goods: Many manufacturers make two tiers of goods. One is their regular high quality line, sold AND serviced by licensed dealers. The other is a poor quality substitute, no service available and sold to big box stores. Kitchen Aid and John Deere are two companies that come to mind. We don't always want to buy less and pay higher prices; a company will respond to that.

Companies with hidden abuses: To avoid exposing myself to potential danger, I'll make this one rather vague. There is a wholesaler in my area that imports illegals to do the work. The other wholesalers must compete-this one can undersell the others by a significant margin. The others either must sell their wares at a higher price because they hire American workers and pay fair wages, or they must break the law to stay competitive. I assure you that if you are not in my area, you will not know which company does this. The law turns a blind eye.

Unions: My brother in law made his career getting textile companies in NC to adhere to safety and fair practices for their workers. The company exploited their workers, as did coal companies, meat packers and others. Perhaps now the exploitation (except illegals) is no longer a problem, but it could return. As I said, unions overstepped their bounds, demanding too much and essentially killing the goose that laid the golden eggs. But that doesn't mean that they did not serve an important purpose.

PS: Fast food: I would have a tough time producing food in my own home that rivals fast food in price (although my food is better quality and better for you) Mass produced food is cheap, especially if workers are not paid much. Some fast food companies don't give benefits for the first 4 months. (Disclaimer: I believe that health insurance should not be tied to employment)

McDonalds had an interesting practice: when employees starting talking unions, the franchise would close and a new on would open, even right across the street.

You’re kidding ... right? You making that claim with a straight face is unbelievable. Unions trying to unionize individual fast food locations and just moving across the road will prevent it ... Amazing!

BTW every Kitchen Aid appliance I have bought carries a warranty and in fact the dealer repair/replacement business is very near my home and has never let me down. I purchased the dishwasher with stainless steel interior as I wanted the added durability but my neighbor bought the enameled interior ... what was he thinking

Lets say that employees wages were increased by the amount of the cost of a reasonable health care policy. How many do you think that had employee paid coverage would drop it and how many of those that didn’t have coverage already would acquire it. I would say that most, especially the young, would pocket the increased income.

I to do not claim to identify with any one denomination. I have attended many, many churches, and have taken something from all of them. I have also rejected many teachings from those whom I do not believe speak the truth as well.

I wrote: "There are only a very few quotes of scripture contained in the Bible that can be attributed as the word of God."

CINO responded: "Now that is a lie straight out of hell."

I'm afraid it isn't. Do you understand the difference between something related in the first person, and hearsay?

99.9% of that which is written in the Bible is hearsay. It was not written by God, thus it is not God's word.

You can argue all day long that it may be considered words written by mortal men who were inspired, just as you may be, by God, but not one of those authors or anyone else who had a hand in what is read in the modern day Bible, was empowered by God to write or edit the many doctrines that we know as the Bible.

You routinely take it upon yourself to write condemnations of others in this forum. Who appointed you to do so? It certainly was not God. You appoint yourself each and every time you hit a key on that keyboard.

Who made you judge, jury, and executioner, to determine who has God's ear, who is deserving of God's grace, and who will feel God's wrath? It certainly was not God.

Who put you in charge of determining what a Christian consists of, and what they are to believe, in order to be considered a Christian? It certainly was not God.

That collection of writings, regardless of who wrote them, what context they were presented at the time they were written, apparently, in your mind, gives you total authority to determine all the above, and you feel empowered to use cherry-picked sentences to lob like darts of self-imposed wrath at others.

Who gave you that authority? Who the HELL do you think you are?

"Your blasphemous arrogance and ignorance of what is Scripture is repulsive."

You truly need to learn the definition of blasphemy. You define it as anything that you do not personally agree with. That's not how blasphemy is defined.

"You even once cited numerous Old Testament verses that you claimed showed Jesus giving monetary assistance to the poor."

No Sir, I did not. The argument was not just Jesus commanding us to give to the poor. Any Old Testament quotations I may have supplied involved believed commandments offered as quotations of God, to assist the poor, which was presented metaphorically, because modern forms of money most likely did not exist way back when.

You're free however, to post those Old Testament references that you claim I supplied in reference to Jesus and money. I'm quite sure that they will not contain any references to Jesus.

Right there exposes you as a bearer of false witness.

I do not claim to be a prophet. You do. I have never once tried to convince anyone to believe as I do. You do consistently.

My "crime," as it may be, has been to post some very factual references that are most definitely contained in the collection of writings known as the Bible.

You attack me viscously, which bothers me not for one second, but you are unable to attack the content which I have presented as facts contained in that Bible, that you consider to be the "word of God."

Can you disprove one single solitary word that I have posted as having come from the Bible? Attacking me is not going to resolve what really bugs you. You're apparently frustrated that the Bible does indeed contain everything I have written, and you cannot refute it, or explain it.

Therefore, I am your scapegoat. Just to remind you, if the Bible is accurate down to the last word contained in it;

1.) God did indeed commit or commanded, at least 32 instances of mass-murder of totally innocent life.

2.) The Bible documents Jesus as a living, breathing human being, who hungered, who thirsted, who could never have been God.

3.) Jesus committed at least two documented sins, even by today's standards. How many sins were not documented? That in no manner is a statement that he did not die for the sins of every other human being, but he was just as human as you and I, and therefore, sinned.

I'd love nothing more than to offer more "blasphemy," or points contained in the Bible that proves the book to be anything but God's word, but I hardly see the point in doing so if you cannot address those three points first.

Disprove them. Refute them. Explain them. I'm wide open to anything that will make my statements incorrect.

I've yet met a hard line, fundamental Christian who has been able to rise up to the challenge.

You seem to be so full of God's wisdom and words that I would have thought that such a challenge would come easy.

The vast majority of the Bible as we know it was pieced together, rewritten, interpolated, and forged by the early church fathers throughout the Dark Ages, a time when the masses were unable to read or write. "Holy lying" was the accepted practice of many, if not most, of those early church fathers then. They believed that it was perfectly acceptable, even sanctioned by God, to lie about factual events if those lies helped to spread the spirit of God and strengthen the authority of the Church. The Church at that time was as much a political entity as a spiritual one, in fact mostly political, and its main intent was to maintain and strengthen its grip upon the masses.

It takes an incredible amount of naivete and willful ignorance to think that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, written by saintly, divinely inspired men. For the con-man to call alprova or anyone else blasphemous and ignorant of what Scripture is is its own sort of blasphemy. The con-man murders, butchers, spits upon, and blasphemes truth and reality in order to cling to his childish little fairy tale and be the good little lamb obeying his masterful shepherd.

The one and only criterion for being a good Christian, at least the kind of Christian that someone like con-man purports to be: Just believe. Do NOT think. Just believe. Be the dutiful little lamb and BELIEVE. It's disgusting and pathetic but what's even worse is to realize that there are tens of thousand, even millions more, brain-dead Christian yahoos just like him who are trying their damnedest to ensnare the rest of us in the cesspool of their backward, repressive religion of blind belief.

God can not murder anyone. Murder does not apply to God. Murder is the unlawfull killing of another. He is the giver of life and has the moral authority to take life. We have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God and all deserve death. You may have noticed that people die.

You have blasphemed again.

You really have no shame.

I'll loan you a gun if you'll hurry it up. Sorry, no sin here and your god's glory is like stink on crap.

"You have blasphemed again."

Interestingly enough, I have that written on my toilet seat. Just took a big blaspheme minutes ago and thought of you.

"You really have no shame."

None, nada, zip. Not one iota. But I'm positive you do hiding in your closet or your Mother's basement. Still wearing her undergarments?

"I am about to lose my temper"

If you do, you can also look for that mind you lost years ago. It's usually with your car keys or under the couch cushions.

This is too easy. Notice I spelled too correctly in my post. Does god count off for misspelled words? Might want to get the Holy Ghost to proofread your posts if he/she/it isn't fluttering around a street lamp tonight.

CINO wrote: "alprova, No Christian church would have you as a member as I have stated in the past."

You're in no position to begin to know that. I really hate to break it to you, but you are not God, and therefore, not all seeing or knowing.

"God used man to write his word to mankind. However, God is the author of Scripture and Scripture, the word of God tells us so."

Are you even remotely aware of how the Bible came about?

The Bible Is Not The Word Of GOD. Jesus is the word of God. He alone is the one and only word of GOD. There is no written word of GOD. There is only Jesus, The Word of GOD. I refer you to John 1: 1-5. Read it. Study it. Try to understand those sentences.

The Bible is a collection of Letters and stories, put together by men combined with Jewish religious texts, which we all now know as the Bible.

It is a religious book that was designed for the purpose of exerting control over the masses. The collection of texts were also amassed and bound together as an introduction to Jesus.

The Bible was not even designed by religious believers. The Bible you read today was altered by the Roman Government for the specific purpose of gaining control over as many people as possible.

Jesus never set up a religion, a church, or any organization. He never introduced a new theology. Neither did His Followers. Jesus demonstrated the proper God given and intended way of life.

The Roman government slowly influenced and changed the words of Jesus to Ekklēsia which became over time what is now known as the modern day Roman Catholic Church.

The Roman government took these letters and stories that the followers wrote to each other then combined them with Jewish religious texts and called it the Bible. Followers were made to believe that they were a God ordained church. Once a church was established, the first religion was born.

The Bible should never be looked upon as something sacred and holy because it is not. Read the Bible for what it truly is, a bunch of letters and stories written by men.

As long as you believe what Jesus brought is a religion, and as long as you believe the Bible is God's word, you miss the true Jesus.

"You know that but you deliberately try to mislead others."

Okay then. Let's see you debunk what I have introduced this evening.

Give it a rest, Alpo. Con simply gives you a reason to gas off about what you know very little. You do your "research", then start pasting. It grows weary. You're so full of methane it's scary. Stay away from open flames.

I see. So then in your mind, he has the "authority" to commit retroactive abortion? How many occurrences of innocent babes being murdered, all allegedly ordered by God, are documented in the Bible? What exactly were their sins? Were they all destined to be budding homosexuals?

I'm not sure that you have thought this one through.

Do you truly believe that only the immediate family members of the patriarch Noah were the only lives on Earth worthy of being spared a horrible death, again, if the Bible is remotely reflective of any actual historical happening?

"We have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God and all deserve death. You may have noticed that people die."

Is your argument now that only those who are true Christians are allowed to live full lives? I was under the impression that the anti-abortion obsession crowd have done a great job of convincing us "heathens" that abortion only killed the truly innocent.

I might see your point if it were written that every child under a certain age had made onto the ark. Now we are all sinners and we all deserve to die, no matter what, no matter when.

Seems to me that there is a little consistency issue here.

"You have blasphemed again. You really have no shame."

And you Sir, have no answers. You're hardly convincing.

"I am about to lose my temper"

Don't smite me.

Mr. Poopy Pants, you have no right nor invitation to tell anyone what they are allowed to post.

You are free to post your little one to two liners, and your little trollisms, just as I am free to fill a text box with as many characters as I so desire.

Your only choice and/or option is to read or not read what you wish.

Geez, Jt, must you always try to pick a fight? I am just communicating some thoughts here. I am not offering solutions, and I am not claiming to have all the answers. If you want to pick a fight, look elsewhere. I have better things to do.

So you post some incorrect B.S., I call you on it, and all of a sudden I'm the bad guy? Aren't you the one that stated you make it clear if what you post is an opinion and if it's not your opinion then it is a verifiable truth. I didn't see were you designated it your opinion so where is your verification. If you don't want anyone to critique your posts then you should keep them to yourself.

You fear what is written in scripture. I don't. The Bible is a very legitimate collection of stories, most of which defy anything resembling reality.

Are you so easily manipulated into believing that every man, woman, and child, with differing blood types, not to mention every single race of human beings, were produced from the incestuous offspring of just one nuclear family consisting of 8 people, that was spared while the rest of the world drowned to death?

Where is your Biblical explanation for that?

~Taken from Sam Harris’, “Letter to a Christian Nation”

You mean the same Sam Harris that:

R. J. Eskow accused him of fostering an intolerance towards Islam, potentially as damaging as the religious fanaticism that he opposes.

Margaret Wertheim, herself an atheist, contended that liberals should view Harris's account of religious faith "with considerable skepticism".

Chris Hedges in his book “When Atheism Becomes Religion” targets Harris as an example of the worst atheism has to offer.

Hedges quoted a statement from Harris's “The End of Faith” advocating a nuclear first strike as arguably "the only course of action available to us, given what Islamists believe" in the event of an Islamist regime such as Iran acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

Harris said "some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them"

Jt6's prey clear in the scope of knowing offers up "a nuclear first strike as arguably the only course of action available to her;" proceeds to stab at thee.

Through the gritted teeth of incredulity, harpoon of truth raised high against a grey foreboding sky the rage:

LIMRIC- for hate’s sake I spit my last napkin of justice at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing snipe, though tied to thee, thou damned Limric! Thus, I give up the spear!"

That Sam Harris? Yup, the very same.
