The Chattanooga City Council has approved bolstering the paving road budget $700,000, making the total an all time high since 2004 at $2.5 million.

After Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke presented his 2014 $212 million budget, several city council members said they wanted to see more money in the $1.7 million budget designated for fixing roads.

After a week of talks, Berke's staff came back with an offer.

But in order to find the money, Berke's staff had to pull from other funding and Councilman Jerry Mitchell recommended cutting a $61,000 salary in the city auditor's office that was designated for addressing the city's sewer woes.

Councilman Chip Henderson said he's pleased that the administration listened and found a way to add money for fixing the roads.

"This is year one in a process," Henderson said.

The city council will move forward with the first reading of Berke's budget at tonight's meeting.
