Woman killed in morning wreck

DALTON, Ga. - A Northwest Georgia woman was killed in a Wednesday morning traffic accident when she failed to stop at a Whitfield County intersection and was hit by an oncoming dump truck, law enforcement authorities said.

Authorities say 38-year-old Christy Lynn Wimpey died almost instantly. Her 9-year-old daughter was taken to Children's Hospital at Erlanger in Chattanooga with serious injuries, but is expected to survive.

The two were en route to the girl's school when the crash occurred at about 7:45 a.m. Officials say neither victim was wearing a seatbelt.

Danny Hammontree, driver of the dump truck, suffered minor injuries.

An investigation is continuing.

U.S. marshals arrest fugitive

BRADLEY COUNTY, Tenn. - The Bradley County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of fugitive Howard Callaway just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Callaway had been added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's "most wanted" list merely hours before.

The U.S. Marshals Service took Callaway into custody, with the help of the Bradley County Sheriff's Department, near the 100 block of White Oak Road.

Callaway was wanted on 32 counts of aggravated burglary, aggravated evading arrest and violating his federal probation while on supervised release.

TBI agents had attempted to take Callaway into custody Monday at the intersection of Bancroft Road and Harrison Pike when he fled and attempted to run over an agent with his vehicle, forcing the agent to fire his weapon at Callaway.

The TBI agent was not injured, and Callaway and his passenger fled into the woods on foot.

Callaway's passenger, identified as April Michelle Gammil, 34, of Cleveland, Tenn., was captured by law enforcement Tuesday morning.

Child molested on SoakYa ride

ROSSVILLE - Police say a Chatsworth, Ga., man molested a child earlier this month while on a ride at the SoakYa water park.

The Catoosa County Sheriff's Office arrested 35-year-old Christopher David Nix on Aug. 15 after a girl younger than 16 told police that Nix touched her in the genital area. The two were on a ride together on Aug. 4 at the SoakYa water attraction, located inside Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park in Rossville.

According to an incident report, Nix admitted to molesting the girl after police arrested him.
