Freshman Blair Barker from Notre Dame High School scored the goal as Jacksonville State University opened its women's soccer season Friday night with a 1-0 win at McNeese State. Barker, a Hixson resident who was a two-time first-team all-state player for the Lady Irish, scored off a goalkeeper's deflection of a teammate's shot 38:27 into the game in Lake Charles, La.

• Samaria Kahn's goal with less than two minutes left in overtime gave the Tennessee Wesleyan College women's soccer team a season-opening 1-0 win Saturday afternoon against Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. Caitlin Sebert made nine saves for Wesleyan, which was outshot 13-7 with a 9-3 disadvantage in shots on goal. Faulkner is 1-1.

• Tennessee Temple also began its women's soccer season with a 1-0 road win Saturday -- beginning a doubleheader at Point University in West Point, Ga. The Point men won 5-0 Freshman Kansas Carpenter from Heritage High School scored 20:49 into the women's match for the Lady Crusaders, who will host Reinhardt at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Camp Jordan Park and then challenge the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Friday night at Finley Stadium. Point (1-1) edged Temple 10-9 in shots; TTU freshman keeper Lyndi Dodd from Warren County made four saves in the shutout. In the Skyhawks' win, Tom Irving assisted on the first goal and scored the next two, both assisted by Frederico Dearamburu, who scored later. Josue Fernandez had seven saves in defeat.

• The Bryan College men's soccer team begins official play Monday night by hosting Toccoa Falls at 7. The Lions, picked to finish second behind Tennessee Wesleyan in the Appalachian Athletic Conference this season, return three first-team All-AAC players -- junior goalkeeper Josh Oldroy, junior midfielder Gustavo Angel Tamayo and senior defender Rasheed Malcolm -- plus second-team midfielder Jorge Gonzalez Giron, a senior. Bryan's Joey Johnson was the AAC coach of the year in his first season leading the Dayton team. The Lions were 12-4-2, 6-1-1 in the AAC.

Golf

• Steve Golliher from Knoxville and Danny Green from Jackson completed a wire-to-wire dominance of the 20th annual Tennessee Senior Four-Ball Championship with a 5 and 4 victory over Ron Waters of Alcoa and Mike Freels of Chuckey in the championship match Saturday at Tennessee National Golf Club at Loudon. Winchester's Jess Voorhies and Franklin's Gary Pierce were the runners-up of the Super-Senior division with a 1-up loss to Jack Ramsey of Germantown and Tim Thompson of Memphis.

• Randy Bowman of Summerville is the only area golfer in the 119-man field for the 2013 Georgia Senior Championship being held Wednesday through Friday on the Deer Creek course at The Landings Club in Savannah. That is the home course for defending champion Doug Hanzel, who won by a staggering 16 strokes at Reynolds Plantation-Great Waters in Eatonton in 2012, his first year of senior eligibility.

Volleyball

• The Tennessee Wesleyan volleyball team lost its first two matches of the season Saturday at Berea College in Kentucky but gave the host team a tussle before falling 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 18-25, 15-5. The Lady Bulldogs then lost 3-2 to Indiana University-Kokomo (5-0), which beat Berea 3-1.

Football

• UTC football coach Russ Huesman will be the guest speaker as the Chattanooga Quarterback Club begins its 2013-14 series of weekly luncheon meetings at noon Monday at the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium. Huesman's Mocs open their season Thursday night against UT-Martin at Finley. Annual club dues are $35, and weekly attendance costs $10 with a hot meal or $4 without. Potential new members are welcome.
