Syria attack defies logic and other letters to the editors

Syria attack defies logic

Let’s see if I have this right. The U.S., to punish Syria for using chemical weapons to kill their people indiscriminately, is gong to bomb them to kill even more of their people indiscriminately.

Sounds like Obama aide.

Ochs center has facts

Mayor Berke’s focus on outcomes is right on. And we do need good public data to tell us where we are starting in order to know what progress we make in these priority areas. The Berke administration will certainly come up with good measures of the outcome of their efforts.

But Chattanoogans need more — an independent yardstick, a set of timely, relevant performance measures to provide additional context and ensure transparency. These are big problems, and a shared set of community data will empower citizens, community groups, corporations, churches and foundations to develop their own efforts, complementing the city’s work. These measures need to be durable, outlasting any individual’s time in office and measuring progress administration after administration.

That’s what the Ochs Center for Metropolitan Studies, Chattanooga’s own “fact tank,” has for decades provided to this community and its leaders: credible, independent data to use in making smart decisions. Just this May, Ochs released comprehensive reports on Chattanooga’s health and the state of education. (Both are available at ochscenter.org/regionreport.php) A report on changing demographics is next.

The Ochs Center is deeply rooted in the Chattanooga community, and it is changing along with our city. We are busy forming new partnerships throughout the community.

Homosexuality not Biblical

I would like for the lady that wrote the bible is unclear on homosexuality to explain Romans 1:24-28 to me. I only finished a few years in college.

Paul is not speaking about animals here. He is talking about men and women. Men with men and women with women and it is a gross sin. I don’t care how the preachers try to make it sound good to keep a big congregation and stay popular, the Bible is very clear about this issue. Sin is sin.

God does not hate the sinner. He hates the sin. I know people who are homosexual. I love them but I hate and despise their sin.

Homosexuals can be saved. See Apostle Paul’s writing in l Corinthians 6:9-11.

Sandhill crane hunts draw ire

Because I disagree with the hunting of sandhill cranes, I will no longer purchase a hunting/fishing license and next election I will vote against Mike Bell, thus giving him more “free time” to hunt sandhill cranes! I encourage others to do the same.

J.B. Collins, let's see, we were attacked on 9/11 by radicals from Saudi Arabia, so Bush chose to bomb and kill thousands of innocent men, women and children in Iraq, a country that had caused us no threat whatsoever -- hum, sounds like neo-con aide.

Somewhere in the Bible you can find all kinds of antiquated mythology. ("You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material.")

Those who make decisions based solely on 2000-year-old folklore are welcome to it . . . as long as it's a personal matter that doesn't limit the rights and freedoms of others.

And, how sad that those fixated on the Bible can't eat pork:
"And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you." Leviticus 11:7-8

Separate a Baptist from his bacon or a Pentecostal from his pulled pork? The Holy Ghost eats a hearty breakfast of country ham and red-eye gravy before a hard day of smiting (takes at least 3,000 calories a day as smiting is heavy work for an invisible spook).

Watch as the fundamentalist thumpers do the "Bible Hokey-Pokey" over that one. They'll be stuttering more than Porky Pig to explain why Jehovah loves pigs feet and chitlins but being gay is not OK.

Another day in the convoluted world of Thumperland.

J.B. Collins, your logic is spot on and your point is well made. I trust you used that same clear logic and you castigated Bush and his neo-con gang of thugs in the run-up to war with Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 and that had not threatened this country in any way, a country that, even if it had WMDs, had no way of deploying them in such a way as to be a threat to us? Has your voice cried out against the 100,000+ innocent men, women, and children who are dead now, or the 2,000,000+ people who have been displaced from their homes? Have you laid the proper blame for the insanity of that war at the feet of the war criminal Bush? Yes, Obama is to be rightfully criticized for perpetuating that war (he should have and could have ended it immediately upon taking office), but Bush is to be bear the brunt of the blame for starting an ill-begotten, senseless war in the first place.

Now Obama is talking war again, even as we are still mired in two others. There is no end to the vicious cycle of war that this country has become addicted to. It's time we change our motto: WAR: IT'S WHAT WE DO.

Why give your life to Jesus when you can give it to Halliburton, Lockheed, Dow Chemical, McCain, Grahman, Corker, Netanyahu, retired generals, and the holy host of neo-cons who need your blood for their empire and financial portfolios?

Trade your sons, daughters, husbands, and wives for the chance to kill Syrian sons, daughters, husbands, and wives.

Wave the American Flag proudly as body bags and maimed service personnel return home. Watch as the Iraqi and Afghanistan people celebrate the American occupation with rose-peddled parades for the collateral damage to their dead children and . . . oops, that didn't happen.

Tell your loved ones that it's a worthy sacrifice when GE and Congress need them to die for the military/corporate empires; that they should be happy to die for their Emperor's interests and Senator's profits.

Tell your loved ones their life is not theirs to live; it's the Empire's life to waste.

That will make everyone happy when the bombs fall, people die, and your kin and friends never come home.

Welcome to America — the land of opportunity to die for money and political bastards.

Moon4kat and daytonsdarwin, shame on you. Have you not been listening to what Saint Orr has been saying about "dispensations?" He's almost as fixated on dispensations as he is AIDS and homosexuality. If you would only listen to his righteous, Holy Spirit infused teachings, you would know that dispensations are God's way of changing his mind about what sins were once unacceptable in his eyes but now they are perfectly okay, based purely on the time frame of his "divine plan" and the people living in whatever era. Apparently the good Christians of today are now free to indulge in breaking the Sabbath, eating pork, growing crops of varying seeds, getting tattoos, committing adultery and fornicating (as long as it's heterosexual adultery and fornicating), lying, cheating, stealing, and even murdering (all perfectly forgivable in his eyes). But homosexuality is without doubt the preeminent sin of all, the ONE sin that is unforgivable, ensuring a gay person a place in the never-ending fires of hell - unless of course the gay person renounces his/her gayness and becomes hetero. Thus the good Christians' fixation upon it and the ferocity of their loving and well-intentioned preaching against it. For they hate the sin but love the sinner...hallelujah and praise Jeezus!

You guys really should listen more to the wise and thoughtful preachings of Saint Orr. I know I have learned a lot from him. For instance, I have learned that when Christians try to sound erudite and explain the Bible on an intellectual level, they look and sound even more ridiculous for having wasted so much time in trying to make sense out of something that is obviously nonsense in the first place.

Rickaroo,

Thank you for showing me the error of my ways. I'll go to church Sunday morning or Saturday morning, dressed in a new wool/polyester suit (or not) wear a new silk tie (or not, maybe linen or not) confess my sins or just sit in the pew and slightly pray, be baptized (or dunked, sprinkled, or squirted), take communion of grape juice (or wine, or blood), crackers (or flesh) then have Sunday or Saturday dinner of ham (or not) shrimp (or not), bread (or unleavened bread) and a nice glass of beer (or sweet tea or water) and enjoy myself with my wife (unless she's unclean). Maybe play Rook (or not) with my kids.

Yes, it's so true now that I've been a sinner when the word of Gawd is so perfectly clear.

Forgive me Jebus!

To those who always scream "I don't like (Bush, Obama) but I Support the Troops"

Maybe instead of new National Cemeteries for the recent and soon to be additional US War Dead, we call them the Lockheed-Dow-Congressional Portfolios-Exxon-Halliburton Fields of Corporate Glory. Above the entrance have the words carved in beautiful red granite, " We Died So Others Make Big Profits" with eternal flames brought to you by Exxon. Don't forget the Changing of the Business Suits on the hour at the Tomb of the Unknown Corporate Mercenary.

Wasn't that worth the life of your family and friends?

dd, that cartoon in your link is spot on. I wish you would post it in the comments section under Bennett's 'toon du jour. It needs to be seen by anyone and everyone who thinks it's blasphemous to dare to say anything negative about our troops. Sorry, folks, but you can't condemn the war without condemning the soldiers who are dropping the bombs and spraying the bullets to kill the innocents. Nobody put a gun to their heads to make them join up. It's time to praise those who are saying NO instead of making heroes of those who ALLOW themselves become part of the killing machine.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have written many posts about dispensations in this particular newspaper alone. (CTFP). For those who have read my posts regarding dispensations accounts within the Holy Bible (revealing Jesus Christ's plans for the human race), and, You yet continue to use non-proof passages from the Old Testament to attempt to make a point about today's world of the New Testament, well, all I can actually say about that is....... Your being misinformed and uneducated can be cured by studying a subject of which You may be currently ignorant. Although the word 'dispensation' is not found in the Holy Bible, neither is the word 'rapture', or, 'millenium', or, Trinity, Yet, lo and behold! The concepts are in the Holy Bible.

Do You want people to believe You are so ignorant and unlearned, so misinformed that You don't even know about dispensations? Even if You have heard of them, yet don't utilize their truths, then it is even worse!! With which adjective would the informed then label You?

Many innocent folks do not know about dispensations within Jesus Christ's plans for humankind. This is no shame, and, certainly not a 'put down' to people who have not yet learned of dispensations. One of the cardinal laws for logical interpretation of Biblical Scripture is: Whatever is stated in the Old Testament must be verified by a reiterating of that admonition, etc, in the New Testament. If there is no reiterating, then, the admonition belongs to another dispensation and is not applicable to the New Testament. Many innocent people attempt to prove that a New Testament admonition is not logical because we don't use the same punishments today when that admonition is transgressed. That just does not work +(:>. That is akin to trying to punish an infant for disturbing the peace the same way an adult can go to jail for disturbing the peace. The Old Testament Law was a 'school master' for bringing in the New Testament.

Please do a study of the various dispensations within the plan of Jesus Christ for humanity. Having done this Your comments will be powerful and applicable...kwo

Ken Orr, bless your little ol' holy rolling heart. You're really a hoot. I wish you could stand outside yourself and read the things you say with the mind of someone who actually HAS a mind to think with. You would see how downright laughable you are as you take yourself so seriously and so piously. Dispensate this: your unhealthy obsession with what two people do behind closed doors is called self righteousness, and if there is ONE sin that is worse than any of the "sins" you think your God wastes as much time knit-picking over as you do, it is self righteousness.

Dispensations: yet another way the Christian apologists try to make sense out of something so nonsensical that even a 12 yr.-old can see the nonsense of it.
