Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel rejects request to certify legalize medical marijuana proposal

Friday, August 30, 2013

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has rejected a request to certify the popular name and ballot title of a proposed measure that would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

McDaniel on Friday rejected the request from Arkansans for Compassionate Care 2014, citing what he called ambiguities in the proposed measure.

The proposal would allow patients with qualifying conditions to purchase marijuana from nonprofit dispensaries. However, unlike a separate similar proposal that McDaniel certified this year, it would allow certain patients to grow their own marijuana.

A similar measure narrowly failed in the November 2012 general election.

McDaniel has to certify the name and ballot title of the proposed measure before the group can start gathering signatures in an effort to qualify for a spot on the 2014 ballot.
