Chattanooga's Wesley Cash lost in three sets to Hans Gallauer of St. Petersburg, Fla., in the singles round of 16 Thursday at the USTA National Men's 50 Grass Court Championships in Philadelphia, but Cash got revenge in doubles. Cash and Michael Tammen of Portland, Ore., the fourth seeds, won 7-5, 7-6 (5) over Gallauer and Jeffrey Winkler, also of St. Petersburg, in the quarterfinals. The top three doubles seeds also won, and Cash and Tammen -- who qualify for 55s play -- face top-seeded Gilbert Schuerholz of Maryland and Andrew Stoner of Arizona in a semifinal today. Gallauer's score against Cash was 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

Soccer

• The Covenant College soccer teams open their seasons today in different places. The Lady Scots play at 3 p.m. at Berry College; the Scots visit Tennessee Temple at 7 at Camp Jordan Park. Covenant is in its first year of USA South Athletic Conference membership and NCAA Division III postseason eligibility, so some extra excitement accompanies this new season. But for the men's team especially, there is a tinge of sadness with the season dedicated to David Taaffe, a team member who died from injuries from a fall during a hiking trip in Switzerland in July. The home opener Tuesday will be "David Taaffe Night." Coach Nathan Pifer has five starters returning from the 2012 team, including Matt Hudnut and Garrison Dale, who scored eight and six goals, and fellow senior Shuler Polk in goal. Juniors Roy Anderson, Hunter Harrison and Hudson Brock have experience in the backfield, and midfielder Gordon Carpenter is back for his second season on the field after missing last year with an injury. Division I transfers Snoopy Davidson (South Carolina) and Alex Lupinek (Lipscomb) along with Gettysburg transfer Michael Arango and freshman Jonathan Blackmon from Birmingham head a strong group of new recruits. Mark Duble's Lady Scots lost 10 seniors from last year's 15-5-1 team and have only two this season, Mary Buys and Beth Wilkening, to go with 10 freshmen. Two junior keepers, Lucy Johnson and Hannah Bales, had success in 2012, and junior Ally Jennings in the backfield and sophomores Ruth Terry and Anne Charlotte Strawbridge are other proven returners.

Cross Country

• Covenant also begins the area collegiate cross country season by hosting its Scots Opener this evening at Shadowlands Field on Lookout Mountain. The women's two-mile meet begins at 6 p.m.; the men's 5k (3.1 miles) starts at about 6:30. Katie Stanford is the coach of both Covenant teams. Beth Burgess, Spookie Eaves and Stephen Dillon are their top returners.
