The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team lost 3-2 to College of Charleston and 3-0 to Georgia Tech in opening its season Friday at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Briana Reed had 15 kills and 11 digs and Allie Davenport added 12 kills and served six aces in the 25-14, 21-25, 25-12, 25-27, 15-12 loss to Charleston, when Anne Bachmann set 35 assists and Catherine Chason and Melissa Green made 13 and 10 digs. Darcy Dorton and Melissa Morello had 15 and 14 kills and 21 and 17 digs for the Cougars. Davenport had eight kills, Julimar Alvarado had seven, Bachman had 26 assists and Chason had 13 digs in UTC's 25-17, 25-20, 25-13 loss to Tech (2-0).
• After going 22-9 and 25-8 the last two years, the Covenant College volleyball team opens the 2013 season today under a new coach, Joanna Ehman, by hosting two other Georgia schools, Oglethorpe and Wesleyan, at noon and 4 p.m. Ehman, a former Lady Scots player, takes over after serving as Heather Taylor's top assistant. The Lady Scots have moved from the Great South Athletic Conference, where they went 10-0 in 2012, to the tougher USA South but has a solid group of returners led by GSAC player and freshman of the year Chelsea VanDyk. Libero Estes Carlson led the GSAC with 501 digs and is Covenant's lone senior, while all-conference junior setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick and sophomores Cora Schroeder and Hannah Rogers are other proven players. The four freshmen are from Houston and Dallas in Texas and from Florida and California. "With the combination of moving into a new confverence and a significant amount of travel with this year's schedule, we definitely have our work cut out for us," Ehman said in a school release. "This team is made up of hard workers who are motivated to build on the success the program has been experiencing over the past few seasons, though, and I know we are up for the challenge."
• Bryan College began its volleyball season with a 3-2 win over Southern Wesleyan and a 3-0 defeat of the host team in the Milligan Mountain Madness tournament Friday. Chelsea Breaden had 14 kills, four aces and 13 digs and Ashley Ferris and Kara Stamper added 12 and 11 kills for the Lady Lions in the 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-9 opener, when Taylor Fink had 47 assists, three aces and 13 digs, Corrie Walker made 20 digs and Meghan Lowry downed nine kills. Breaden had 14 kills and three aces, Fink had 34 assists, Ferris made eight kills, Walker had 14 digs and Madison Akins served four aces in the 25-15, 25-14, 25-18 win over Milligan.
• Haley Jennings had 48 assists as Tennessee Temple won 3-1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18) in volleyball Friday night at Johnson University. Lydia Vick had 12 kills and matched Jade Mast's 18 digs for Temple (1-1), and Shatoya Medford added 17 digs.
• Junior Jamie Sue Wilson had 12 kills in the first match and nine in the second, when she also served four aces, as the Sewanee volleyball team began its 2013 season with comfortable 3-0 wins over Kentucky schools Pikeville and Brescia in the Sewanee Invitational tournament Friday. Jamie Kosman had eight digs in the 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 defeat of Pikeville and nine in the 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 romp past Brescia. Rachel Schuman totaled 30 assists and freshman Diamond Stewart had 11 kills and 12 digs in the Tigers' two matches.

• Former Soddy-Daisy High School standout Hannah Wyatt had an assist and two goals as UTC defeated neighbor Tennessee Temple 5-0 in women's soccer Friday night at Finley Stadium. All the scores came in the first 36:10. Crystal Mackezyk scored 9:55 in from a Monica Speth assist, and those two fed Wyatt for her goals at 15:20 and 21:29, after Wyatt set up Clare Latham at 12:16. Melanie Arredondo had the final goal for UTC (1-1), which outshot the Lady Crusaders (1-2) 14-4.
• Garrison Dale, Hudson Brock, Ian Meredith and Gordon Carpenter scored as Covenant College beat Tennessee Temple 4-0 in men's soccer Friday night at Camp Jordan. The Scots are 1-0, the Crusaders 0-2.
• Two lightning delays and three Berry College scores in the first half marred the Covenant women's soccer opener Friday. The Lady Scots lost 3-0 in the opening match of the Berry Invitational. Maggie Midkiff, Sara Dillon and Kim Fischer scored for the Vikings in the seventh, 14th and 43rd minutes. Hannah Bales made six saves for Covenant, and Lucy Johnson made three.
• The Sewanee men's soccer team tied Case Western Reserve 1-1 in the season opener for both teams Friday in Granville, Ohio. Case Western scored 10:20 in and Ford Emerson equalized for Sewanee at 27:28. Derek Williams made four saves and Jacob Zalewski added three for the Tigers, who were outshot 22-15.
• Southern Polytechnic, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA preseason poll, beat Tennessee Wesleyan 4-1 in men's soccer Friday afternoon at Union College's tournament in Barbourville, Ky. The Hornets are 3-0, the Bulldogs 1-1.
Tennis
• Chattanooga's Wesley Cash and partner Michael Tammen from Portland, Ore., lost 7-6(4), 6-1 to the top-seeded tandem of Gilbert Schuerholz of Maryland and Andrew Stoner of Arizona in the semifinals Friday of the USTA National Men's 50 Grass Court championships in Philadelphia. Cash and Tammen, the No. 4 seeds, will play for third place today. They already won the 55s national indoor title this year after Cash and Mark Vines of Virginia swept all four USTA 55s titles in 2012.
Cross Country
• Seven Covenant women's cross country runners finished in the top 10 and six Covenant guys had top-10 finishes as both teams beat Maryville College in the Scots Opener held Friday evening on Lookout Mountain. Covenant's Spookie Eaves was first in the women's two-mile race in 13:28.57, and teammates Beth Burgess, Esther Anderson, Anna Hankal and Grace Bodron were second, third, fifth and sixth. Maryville freshman Sean Hagstrom won the men's 5k in 18:24.66, but Covenant's Stephen Dillon (18:57.98), Justin Jantomaso and Matt Gorter were second through fourth and three teammates were seventh through ninth.
